Thanks guys. One of the big things that motivated me to lose weight and start exercising was seeing that my fasting glucose level was 100 at the time of my last physical. When I pulled my last four lab results, I saw that the glucose level had risen each year and realized I was on a slippery slope.

It is thanks to this thread and others in the health and early retirement forum that I pulled my lab results and looked at them again. My doctor didn't make much of a fuss over the fact the the glucose levels had been rising.

When I first started the new lifestyle, I read many of the books on fitness and diabetes that were mentioned on this forum. That was very helpful as well.

So many thanks to you all!!!!!!

Very inspirational story, Helen, thanks for sharing!

I got back on track this week, after last week's up-tick. So far, this lower-carb eating is working really well for me. I'm not even in ketosis*, but I'm rarely hungry, and I don't get that lethargic, 'bout-to-burst feeling that was common after eating carb-heavy meals. In general, I feel much, much better, even though I still have plenty more weight to lose.

* That's a subjective observation, since I'm not measuring with keto-sticks. I base it on the fact that a) I'm consuming 30-50 grams of carbs per day, and b) I don't have the elevated body temps, insomnia, nor alcohol intolerance that I experienced while doing Atkins years ago.

Great job ProspectiveBum! It's a good sign when you're sustaining a low-carb diet while being rarely hungry and not lethargic.

It's pretty effective, but I don't recommend it!

Congratulations on a remarkable effort, Helen!

And just to provide a counter example, I spent much of last week on the road, and proved once again that travel is, indeed, broadening.

Hopefully there were at least a few good beers in the mix (might as well broaden your mind as well, right?).

My funny, clever, adored doctor!

Last year I weighed almost 68 kilos. He pronounced me "modestly overweight" and I asked what he wanted me to lose. He said 2-3 kilos. This year I weighed in at 63 kilos, therefore had lost 5 kilos. He immediately saw that I had lost them when he came in. However, he pronounced me in his summary notes again, "modestly overweight." I asked him what he wanted me to be. He said 60. So here I go!

Helen really motivated me to get back on track or maybe she shamed me into it . So anyway I am down a pound this week.
