3 or 4 inches on the ground here. I checked the weather forecast, and it will melt before I need to go anywhere further than the mailbox.

Maybe I should take Kumquat's hint.

FinanceDude, we got maybe 10-12 inches from this storm and the same a couple of days before, from the prior storm. A fair amount was lake effect because my sister on the Wisconsin side got about what you got.

Me either! Both my Dad and Mom were hams ....Dad is passed away, but Mom just renewed her license. When my Dad started getting older, I was nominated to do the tower climbs. Fortunately we replaced the old scary tower with a nice new Rohn, with not only a hinged base, but also a hinge mid-way up....with a counterbalance! That made things nice! After a few years Mom sold and/or gave away most all of the ham gear, except for a 2-meter fm rig.....and we gave the Rohn to a family friend. No tower to bother with anymore.....only a chimney mount 'ringo-ranger' on a nearly flat roof.

I also used to help sandbag a low lying area here in town, and also another tiny community about 5 mile north of here. But after TWO "one hundred year floods" in ONE year, there's nothing left there to sandbag......they had a gov't buy-out! It's open park land now.

You got that right! No more 5am shoveling sprees in the early morning darkness for me. I went out about 9 this morning and played in the white stuff....in the bright sunshine!

And did you remember the James Bond locomotive snow blower scene?

We discussed the Wovel here, right?

Add me to the list of people who don't worry about snowblowers. 65 degrees out and everyone has turtlenecks AND quilted jackets.

You were lucky ! I've seen some pretty bad injuries from snow blowers and lawn mowers .Lots of people put their hand into them to see why they are not working .Not too smart !

snowshoes?

sorry, Martha. I feel (well, felt) your pain. It was a big problem for us in the city with a 2-car driveway and literally no physical place to put the shoveled snow.

Thanks for all the comments regarding "youbet's famous snowblower incident!"

I'm pleased to report that since posting that story, I've cleared the snow from both my and the neighbor's driveways twice with no injuries nor horror story-like experiences.

Winter in Chicago...... it either kills ya or makes you stronger!

I used to really hate shoveling -- in 2004 I tried to drive my minivan up the driveway, slid back down, and got stuck in a snowbank. Then I called a tow truck, but the driver wouldn't pull it out because he was afraid his truck would slide down the driveway and crash my car. So I had to melt all the ice before he would tow it.

I bought two bags of snow melt and spent two hours melting and shoveling most of the ice. Then I called the tow truck driver and by the time he came over the sun had come out and started melting the rest. Damn!

Glad I live in a HOA townhome community now. The six inches of snow is nicely shoveled from all the sidewalks.

It'll melt? Once December comes where I live any snow we get stays until march or later. The worst part of winter for me, even worse than driving, is coming out to my car after it's parked for 12.5 hrs at work and having to scrap the ice and brush the snow in the cold for 15 minutes just to go inside the car and find that the inside of the windshield in frosted over too. My car is parked from about 4:40 pm until 5:10 am. So it's parked during the coldest hours of the day and i have to go out and scrap at the coldest time often below zero. I long for the days I don't have to go anywhere from Dec.-Apr. I have off of work from Dec 17th until Jan 10th. That's the best I can do for now.

Your car sounds like a good candidate for a remote starter! I've had them installed in the last few cars we've owned. I push the button, and the car fires up! I leave the defroster turned to 'on' and the fan set to about '3'. It melts the ice and snow off the windows in no time flat, and the car is nice and toasty when I climb in. It's also nice in the summer with the A/C!!!

There's a built in, pre-set timer on them so they will only run for 20 minutes...in case you forget about it....which I have a time or 2. Also, you don't have to worry about theft because if someone tries to put it in gear, or they press the brake pedal, the engine shuts off immediately. They are NICE!!!

Retirement in southern Missouri is going to be fun for me, even if it snows.

My thoughts/dreams about how I will handle the snow are that I could just shovel a path to the mailbox and leave it at that! If my house has no sidewalk, I can't think of why I would need to shovel any more than that. I don't intend to drive in the snow anyway (since I don't know how).

I plan to keep a very full pantry and to have some gym equipment so that probably I would have no reason to leave until the snow has melted. I hope I'm not being unrealistic. I am also planning to live within walking distance of various stores and commerce if possible.

I will only be 61 when I retire, but I plan to cut back on driving gradually over the following 20 years. Old people driving cars are scary! As it is, I only drive 4500 miles per year even now.

This is very important. DO have a backup supply of your vices! You don't want to consider going out in bad weather because you ran out of soft drinks/caffeine/alcohol/nicotine...

A small comfort for the folks in freezing temps and with snow on the ground.

You didnt have to go out and cut the lawn yesterday like I did...

Or cut back wildly overgrown vegetation for the umpteenth time, like I did... Filled 14 heavy bags with the stuff yesterday, and I am only 1/3 done, if that.
