Pain from patellofemoral arthritis - resolved or not?

My knees have been sore around the tops of the kneecaps, and an x-ray showed that I have small bone spurs at the top and bottom of the kneecaps (aka patellofemoral arthritis). I'm not sure how long they've been there, but they started hurting recently when I tried to increase the weight on my lunges and also started running a little on a treadmill again. I'm 53 and have lifted weights, among other things, since my early 20s.

Anyone else have this knee condition, and if so, were you able to go back to your previous activity level? I had issues with heel spurs (probably from running) back in my 20s, but after some time off was able to run again without pain, so I'm hoping in spite of the extra years that knee issue might resolve this way as well.
