Big Bet to make $500K in a couple months or less
Hypothetical exercise.
$4M assets fully invested
$2M margin available, no current margin balance
Current cash in brokerage account $164K
GOAL: Make $500K over the next couple of months through market timing or some other stupid, risky endeavor.
Current ideas...
Buy a big ass put or call option...really stupid and risky
Use $1M margin to buy ETFC (etrade)....stupid because they've already run up and its risky
More stupid ideas please

Being up this late must have turned off you brain... I know it has mine
Why not invest in Citi... and hope for the best... (not likely to make the money... but neither are your ideas)....
OR, take your time machine back and invest in Yahoo before the Microsoft offer.... wouldn't that be a hoot...

Why the long time horizon? I usually rack up 500k in 10 minutes or so

Bet the dollar against the euro on the forex spot market. At $2mm, you should be able to get your costs down to under a pip... easy spread to make, assuming the trade goes your way.

Go to the casino and find the roulette wheel. Bet 500k on red. Take home your winnings. Or not.

Give $500K to your favorite political person, get them elected, and get "favors" forever............

Craps table. Bet don't pass. Better odds.

I've got if figured out. Quick bet on Yahoo puts monday morning. If I can beat the fall. Have to sell immediately after I put up some gains though cause MS will probably be coming back with a higher offer.

If you want to limit risk, put/call options on futures.
If you don't want to limit the downside, buy/sell futures contracts.

The whole premise in non-sensical unless you change the GOAL to read:
GOAL: Make < or lose > $500K over the next couple of months through market timing or some other stupid, risky endeavor.
Then just take any risky bet you can find. No one's giving away money, but they do take high risk bets. You win or lose a bet.
The other way is called 'work'.

Good point.
Find a casino that'll let you lay $250k for a small pass bet. Wait until you make a four or ten point, then put down the $250k as odds.

Gold futures.
Open a commodity futures account. Buy gold futures. As the price goes up, buy more gold futures with your paper profits. Sell out when your profit hits $500K.
