What is the attraction of holding it? I don't know much about AMC other than having been to their theaters but I don't understand the valuation premise.

No RM, I get it from the company's view... if you have the opportunity to sell pennies for $1 then you sell all that you can... what I don't understand is why investors are buying it.

Me neither, which is why I sold a chunk of it. I only bought it because of the run ups and being silly. I can see some attraction because of things opening back up, and a lot of people now going to movies that they could not before, but I don't see any long term growth in theatres in any reasonable expectation.

I mean I bought 30 shares, sold 15 with enough profit to pay for a weekend trip so I can't complain. The other 15 are basically gonna spin in the roulette wheel.

We haven't been to a theater since Casino Royale was new, which was probably about 15 years ago. We don't like the environment there, the other customers are awful, the cost is too high, and the sound volume is deafening (to me anyway). I won't even mention the blatant drug dealing and consumption that goes on in theatres in our area.

I don't know but suspect that others dislike watching movies in theatres, too.

This video shows you I think one of millions of investors who are doing pretty much the same thing.

Note that in that video he is investing 100% of his 1.5 million in the goal of making 10 million. He is merely one of hundreds of thousands doing the same thing, which is having a major impact on the market.

When you consider the US stock market has increased by 25 trillion dollars since 2015 to 50 trillion today. In 2008 US Stock market had cap of 11 trillion dollars and GDP of 15 trillion since GDP has increased to 22 Trillion so 7 trillion of GDP resulted in 40 trillion in valuation increase, it is far more profitable to make money via stock markets than in the real markets. This is just an exponential take on the FED model of stock markets representing the real market. At the present exponential increases an increase to 30 trillion of GDP should see the stock market at 250 trillion. Which if we do that in the next 10 years would give every living American $833,333 in value.

Some may think this is crazy, but it is the present economic system. Bonds are for suckers, oh and the Federal Reserve!

Sadly, very true, for all the reasons you mention and others as well.

I still recall the big old theaters - the ones that a city of 40,000 people could have maybe two such theaters. Every week, there were first-run movies with big stars at EACH theater. Often, there was a "B" picture included "free." Seats were comfortable and reasonably spaced. There were real ushers to help you to a seat if the show had begun. Popcorn was cooked fresh and NOT stored from the night before in a plastic bag. Most movies at these theaters would have been suitable for families. Adult themes were there (looking back at offerings now on TCM) but, much like the "horror" of the time, it was more implied than explicit. Children were either quiet or asked to leave. Adults didn't talk - and cell phones were only an inkling if you watched old Dick Tracy serials on Saturday AM. Kids got in for $.10.

That was an experience worth the time, effort and money. Today's crappy little theaters with texting teens and talking adults - in the audience - is no longer a pleasure. Nor would I consider most of the movie fare particularly interesting. I've gotten where I can spot the CG effect - and in fact, most movies seem to be green screen with background filled in later.

I'd be the first to admit that I'm old and I tend to like things the "way they used to be." So sue me. Well, forget I said that. I just don't enjoy most movies anymore and I hate the current process of seeing a "theatrical" movie. I'll wait for it on "free" (make that "included") TV. It's too bad, really. The "theater experience" used to be "special" - I guess, kind of like airplane travel used to be "special." Time marches on, things change, we adapt or else limit our exposures as required. I use air travel because I have to. I don't go to movies any more because I don't have to. End of rant because YMMV.

Oh, sorry for the slight thread drift.

To the moon!

ETA: There's a lot of folks who lack knowledge but have some money. Most are taking risks they don't understand.

You know, the stuff that makes owning gold and other PMs look absolutely logical, wise, maybe even brilliant! Gold actually, well, "exists." Of course, YMMV.

Wow! I don't follow AMC and other meme stocks, and thanks to this thread I saw that AMC stock price doubled today. Crazy stuff! The stock price is now more than 10X its value prior to the pandemic, even after dilution with new issued shares. Who would have thunk?

At this rate, AMC will soon grow to the point that it can buy out Tesla, which has been declining too, and pay for it with Dogecoin.

Ridiculous? All kinds of crazy stuff have happened within the last 12 months, I wonder if all this is real, or we are all in the Matrix.

Even scarier is that I saw "Robinhood" trending on Twitter. Why, you ask? When the NYSE put out the stops due to volatility earlier today, these "investors" thought that RH had stopped the trading. Oye, oye, oye.

I think this sort of "craziness" is actually a (reasonably) logical outcome of dumping money on people from airplanes. What are they gonna do with it? They could go to Vegas, but why spend on travel and have to wear a mask. Just see what's hot in the speculation biz and pile on. I think that's why the equities markets are so inflated now. You can't put it in the bank (well, you could, but why would you.) SO folks are thinking "HEY, it's only money. The next plane will fly over in a week or two." YMMV

That's funny. Fidelity has made a play for recovering Robinhood investors as a nice place for their madness.

I think there's something more sinister than people just having some "free money".

What if it's a Covid effect? They talked about asymptomatic contraction of the virus. Yeah, that's what they thought.

Surely, the afflicted do not cough or have a congestion or fever, etc..., but look how they think, or rather fail to. They believe in all sorts of silly theories (many I shall not name), and crazy ways of getting rich with no risks.

Yep, I would not be surprised when some researchers discover that the Covid pandemic is also the "Invasion of the Mind Snatcher".

Then, the question is whether this is a long-haul effect. Do the afflicted stay crazy for life?

Or maybe it's the Zombie Apocalypse due to the "shots." Enquiring minds want to know but YMMV.

No, not the shots!

These things started before the shots, but after the pandemic breakout.

I probably had Covid-19 last April and had this odd side effect. I was reading Reddit Wallstreetbets and put money in Tilray(TLRY) in early February, see the couple days it tripled? I owned it then as a trade, did I sell in the post market at ~75, no I waited for it to go to the moon and fall the following day. Still made fast cash but now I'm ruined. I have the post Covid-19 WSB trading expectations and need a new drug. Adrenaline must be released in large quantities. Returns of 100% in a few days should be the new norm.

QUICK - There's a Country and Western song in this post someplace - someone more talented than me: Give it your best shot!

All I've got so far is:

.
I'VE GOT THE POST COVID-19 WSB TRADING BLUES

I need a new drug, 'cause adrenaline must be in large doses.
Here I've got FOMO and it's already May - wait, no, June!
If I can't make 100% in just a few days, then, (hold yer noses),
I'm gonna wait on the next high flier headin' fer the moon.

Maybe Gamestop or AMC?
Does Robinhood have my daily fix?
Nope. Them guys just restarted trading
But I'm stuck here in the sticks

Now you know why I don't live in Nashville and, yes, YMMV.
