gain an extra year by not renewing
Just putting this info out there cause I hadn't noticed it written about anywhere...
I didn't do it on purpose but I accidentally let my son's global entry expire by a couple days before I reapplied. This ended up being a new application and not a renewal. Since we live 15 minutes from a global entry office, I set up an appt for him and we knocked it out while we were gonna be driving by there anyway. The officers took care of him in 2 minutes. (This is a great office...I did my other son's interview here as well a few years back)
Anyway, now instead of an expiration 5 years from his recent birthday, it expires 6 years after his recent birthday. Since we have had no travel since his birthday, it's effectively an extra free year.
Obviously this may not be so convenient for most people and so not worth the $20 value of one extra year, but just thought I'd share. It is also possible that his global entry number might have still worked for our upcoming trip, but I didn't want to chance it which is why I arranged for the interview beforehand. But if anyone ever provides a data point that their expired but conditionally approved KTN works for TSA precheck, then this would be a useful hack for everyone. My guess is that it wouldn't work, but it is possible since the KTN stays the same.
