I did not take the anti malaria drugs either. I spent 4 days in Cambodia and 16 days in Thailand. I used deet insect repellent at 100% strength and didn't get any bites. It is winter there now and dry so mosquitos are not so bad. Malarone is a newer drug with supposed less side effects. As my guide said "the choice is yours".
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Do research on the anti-malaria drug option. Go see a doc, and make an educated decision. A combination of sleeping nets and constant application of effective insect repellent should limit your exposure to malaria infested mosquitoes. But all it takes is one bite.

I took Malarone on my trip to Tanzania last summer. It's new and more expensive than Lariam but hardly anyone complains about side effects. I felt fine with it.

Well, apparently I can't take Lariam because I'll be in Battambang, which (along with all the border areas with Thailand) has Lariam resistant malaria. Super mosquitoes!

So Malarone or doxycycline would be my only choice if I take anything. Though according to the WHO this risk in the province I'll be is relatively low compared to areas near Vietnam and Laos. Plus, I don't plan on any jungle adventures, just sticking to a couple towns.
