White Sands is now the 62nd National Park. Its designation change to a national park from a national monument was legislated in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020.

One may ask what this has to do with the National Defense budget. I think it is quite often that something is piggybacked on to a piece of unrelated legislation for expediency. It's a weird custom, but that's how the US works.

If you go to White Sands, be sure to allow time to visit the nearby White Sands Range Missile Museum. Admission is free. I spent a couple of hours there.

We're going to visit there this year.

I was on a couple of test teams for Navy missile development in the early 90's and went there several times a year for test launches. Fascinating place.
