Martha, wouldn't legalization bring brothels where the ladies are checked by medical professionals on a regular basis a la Holland?
Personally, I'd like to second HaHa's comments. I voted yes. Makes sense to me.

Good observation. I would disagree as to the cause; I think it has more to do with the acceptance in Hispanic culture of young girls with grown men. The same is true for many, if not most of the developing world. However, Hispanics are the largest immigrant group and hence the reason for your observation. Some of the men may not be aware that it's illegal to be with an underage girl in this country. So while the offenders may be classified as sex offenders, there may be two consenting individuals with the blessing of the girl's mother and/or father. Often, the boyfriends/partner of these young girls help provide support for the young girl and her family. I know it's not always a male/female encounter but for the most part it is.

I hardly think so; sounds like a really tough job to me. If a woman had several clients a day, I could see this been very boring, mind numbing and may be painful. I can see how a man would think it's a fun job though.

A man asks a woman "Would you have sex with me for one million dollars?" After thinking about it for a while, the woman says "sure". The man then asks "Would you have sex with me for $50?". The woman gets upset and shouts "What kind of woman do you think I am?" The man replies, "We've already established that, now we're just haggling over price."

If politicians are not being thrown in jails, I don't see why prostitutes should.

I totally agree with Khan. How many times have we seen women marry or live-in for money, social status, military benefits, to serve as a baby vessel, etc etc ?
All that is missing is the pimp, fishnet stockings and miniskirt and the streetcorner.

I'm like jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces- Give me the wife with fishnet stockings and miniskirt--hold the pimp and streetcorner.

It's wise to use protection in a prostitution thread....

The biggest beneficiaries of laws against prostitution are the pimps and the police.

Atlas888 you hit that one dead on the Head.
IMHO prostitution should be legal for all consenting adults. My definition of consenting adult is any one over 45 years old and who's children are grown.

A legal brothel would protect girls against mental and physical abuse from pimps, and customers from deseise. The problem would be the after market. Young girls below 18. A legal brothel would not want to house them, so they would be left out. Of course it goes without saying that we would rather there not be girls younger than 18 in that profession, but wishing and doing are two different things.
We would have to have REAL police intervention for under age girls, and prosecutions for the males to deter it.. The numbers might be too great for serious police and court intervention. That's why I thihk concentrating on child pornogrophy and prostitution amonst very young girls must take priority, and leave the rest to brothels.
With the advent of the internet for solicitation, a new form of police detective is needed as well.

Being a somewhat Liberal Libertarian, I feel people have a right to make poor choices. So of course prostitution should be legal. Hopefully, there would be some slight government regulation on health issues. Even Libertarians believe one of the few government's duties is to protect its citizens so STP's would fit into this category.

When I split up with my DW of 26 years, several male friends said they were staying in their marriages for the money. They claimed they could not survive on their 50% of the family assets.
These guys had affairs and used prostitutes while remaining in their "loveless" marriages. Definitely an unhealthy side-effect of our strange laws.
