65" ROKU 4K Smart TV for...$228?! Plus New Twist on Warranties

Jaw-dropping price on a 65" ROKU 4K Smart TV.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/onn-65-Cl...1261/422957278

Some caveats:
1. The TV is currently out of stock.

2. The TV is a "no-name" brand name. ONN--never heard of it.

3. There is NO WARRANTY beyond the 30 day return period. However, you can buy a three year warranty ($25) or a four year warranty ($34).

The TV gets a 3.8 out of 5.0 for review scores but a closer looks reveals the majority of 1 star reviews were because the TV was damaged during shipping. Otherwise most owners were delighted with the TV. The most common knock against it were comments like, "black levels aren't as deep as my Sony (or Samsung, or LG) but are not bad."

It's a freakin' 65" TV for $228!

I wonder if this idea of purchasing a warranty will become commonplace when purchasing electronic devices. It's been my experience that if an electronic device doesn't fail in the first 30 days, you are probably going to have trouble free service for years.

I think Onn is Walmart's house brand for electronics. The TV kinda looks like a TCL in the picture, but I have no information on who might manufacture it.

Looking at the bottom edge, center of TV I noticed that the clear plastic power indicator housing looks identical to my HiSense ROKU TV. Only the onn name brand stamped above it is different. TCL TV's have a different looking power indicator light.

See it here, and compare to the onn brand at Walmart. The one at Walmart looks like a HiSense, which is good because I really like mine (which was $299 on sale at Target.)

The top three ROKU TV makers are:

TCL
HiSense
Westinghouse

There are about a dozen others.

For sure ROKU supplies the software for all these brands and probably the remotes (which are likely stamped with the TV manufacturers name on them.) I'm not sure if ROKU supplies the streaming circuitry (WiFi and related circuits). The LCD panel supplier is the most important factor, and I have no idea who makes them. It could be TCL makes them for TCL; HiSense probably makes their own, but after that, who knows?
