email hosting

Google start charging for workspace email. I have one real estate related email, I am paying $6/month and OK with it. Now they want to charge $6 per user for my personal emails. I have 10 between my family members and no way I am going to pay $60 per month for that. Any good email hosting you can recommend? TIA.

I haven't seen anything about google charging for personal email accounts. I would have thought this would be bigger news?

We just use our ISP to host our private domain. IIRC it is like $20/year including one user and an additional $10-15/year for the second user including paying for their optional spam filter. It's a local company and when I call (rarely) I get someone who actually knows useful things and can go and check/fix the issue.

Same here. I highly doubt Google would actually be considering charging all users for basic Gmail. And $6/month? $72/year? No way they're gonna do that. OP, do you have a link to where you saw this news?

I’m in the same boat. A long time ago I set up a number of domains for family members and they all need to migrate now.

Basically everyone is just using another email they already have - mostly on iCloud or gmail.

If you want to keep getting email sent to that custom domain you can set up forwarding pretty easily.

Hover.com offers a decent email forwarding service for domains you might have with them ($5 per year). I already have some stuff at Dreamhost and was able to set up forwarding there too.

Apple also lets you assign a custom domain to their iCloud email. No cost if you already use them. Works with Family plans too if you want are sharing the domain with family members.

From an email from Google:
Discontinued in 2012, the G Suite legacy free edition has provided access to premium Google Apps features for over 10 years. On June 1, 2022, Google will begin upgrading G Suite legacy free edition accounts to Google Workspace.

Don’t wait: Upgrade today and save.

When upgrading to a Google Workspace paid subscription, you’ll unlock new premium collaboration and security features, while continuing to have access to all the ones you already love like using Gmail with your custom domain (ex. your-name@example.com) and the ability to manage multiple users. As a valued customer, you can get started now with Google Workspace Business Starter. Billing will not start until at least August 1, 2022, and you’ll also get a discount of at least 50% for 12 months after that date.*

I have 3 domains hosted with google. The newest was set up in 2012, and I already paid 3 month for their "upgrade". This current one is my last name, so I got 10 users. My oldest was set up 2006 for another business. I guess I will be upgraded on that one soon.

I don't mind paying $6 if I have any business usage. I just wish they have a per domain policy. I am not going to pay $60 per month for my private emails.

Ahh, OK, now I see. The quote from @mpierce makes it clear that, indeed, anyone using a custom domain for their personal Gmail will have to start paying for it, beginning in June. Kind of surprised to learn that Google had ever offered free custom domains for Gmail. No one I know uses a custom domain for their personal email, so I suspect this will affect a very small percentage of users. Certainly, $6/month seems pricey for just this feature.
