A very interesting thread on Twitter, with dozens of links, from Zeynep Tufekci about why telling everyone they don't need masks, that we should let only medical professionals wear them, probably backfired and caused them to be hoarded.

I think they were snapped up from the very first of the outbreak in China. Foreign students were buying them up and sending them home. Local pharmacy had theirs bought out by students very early.
