My mothers friend gets home help from our county. Mostly washing services as she can manage cooking etc herself. This service has been shut down thanks to C-19. But yesterday they knocked on her door and came barging in. No masks. No gloves. No distancing.

My mothers friend used to be a nurse and was quite shocked. She made them stop and put on single use gloves she handed out to them. After they left she sat down and wrote a terse letter to the mayor's office.

This over in Norway btw.

It is an opinion article (and so labeled by the NY Times), not a news article.
It does give news of what Indiana found with their random sampling.

11x more cases than found through regular testing. Only 1.5% of the population has been exposed so far. Death rate looks more like 0.56% - still way higher than influenza.

Looks promising, however, there have been no human trial yet.

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...utics/2326358/

"What's key to remember though about the results from Sorrento is that this is laboratory data, they haven't actually tested this drug in actual human beings. So once that happens, it'll be great, but we need to see safety and efficacy data," said Dr. Lipi Roy, NBC News medical contributor.

Our state started reopening but me and my family decided to stay home a little further since we think its still too early to reopen. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Interesting comparison of today's response vs. the response of 1969. While this pandemonium is far from being over, it will be a few years when we can make a true honest comparison.

At a minimum I think we should probably wait until we have an effective treatment protocol and understanding of immunity before trivializing this disease. A cure would be even better, but that’s wishful thinking at this stage. Right now we have none of those, nor do we know how this will evolve. I opt for a bit of humility and choose to err on the side of caution.

Interesting.

The idea that a pandemic could be controlled with social distancing and public lockdowns is a relatively new one, said Tucker. It was first suggested in a 2006 study by New Mexico scientist Robert J. Glass, who got the idea from his 14-year-old daughter’s science project.

“Two government doctors, not even epidemiologists” — Richard Hatchett and Carter Mecher, who worked for the Bush administration — “hatched the idea [of using government-enforced social distancing] and hoped to try it out on the next virus.” We are in effect, Tucker said, part of a grand social experiment.

A Question about Grand Kids,
My Grandkids live close to me. Since last two months I have seen them from distance, but I am afraid to touch them because of COVD scare. I am diabetic and scared of viral transfer. My daughter thinks, it may not be safe for me to play with kids because of my weak immune system. So I am wondering if she is right?
Does anyone have similar experience?
Is it safe to visit and play with Grandkids?

How isolated from others are your grandkids and their parents?

We have three grandchildren living nearby that we haven't seen since mid-March. Both their parents work at home, but one of the grandsons (17) works at a supermarket which means he exposes himself and his entire family to transmission. That risk is more than we are willing to take, so Face Time is as close as we are going to get for now.

My parents are in their 70's, so they won't be seeing the g-kids close up until/unless vaccine, etc. Or real-time at home reliable testing. Outdoor well-spaced visits are probably ok, but for someone with a compromised immune system I'd avoid it in your shoes. I'm 50 and healthy, but I haven't been within 6 feet of my niece and nephew in months.

Kids are playing with other kids, and getting back to normal faster than the rest of us, which they should. Unless they've been locked in their house with only their parents for a month, which is unlikely. Kids are also more likely than adults to get an asymptomatic infection, especially as things are reopening.

Interesting read. But as the article points out, we live in a different world. The article states that 'eating out' was very uncommon in 1968 and this is certainly my recollection - maybe once or twice a year at a restaurant. It also says that 'death' was more accepted given proximity to WW2, Korea, Vietnam (returning soldiers helped spread the flu). It doesn't mention that the US population was 200 million with a demographic profile that looked more like a current African country than the upside down pyramid that we currently have. Also, doesn't mention that air travel was expensive and relatively uncommon and international air travel even moreso. Medical care is dramatically different and much more profit driven and life at any cost in some places. I suspect that the situation with LTC facilities is also dramatically different - less seniors, shorter lifespan, more extended families, etc. Politicians and the press were different. There was no internet. There are infinite differences.

Agree that it will take a long time to sort out and we can never know some of the answers for certain.

My wife and I are both in very good to excellent physical health at our age, 63. (cholesterol meds only) My sons keep good SIP and safe distancing discipline within their families as all are able to work from home and both have teachers among each family. We all live in communities that have had zero deaths and very few infections. My county has 5 active cases of the virus and the closest is over 15 miles away from where we live. With that said, there's no way we would not spend time with our grand kids. We have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and graduations as a family hosted in our home.

The risk of infection as well as death has been weighed and we, as a family find the risk acceptable.

The jury is still out, but history can be a great teacher. I was in the service in 68, but honestly miss how much simpler life seemed and we actually had more serious journalism back then.
