I found this site while surfing and decided to sign in. Was sort of forced into early retirement at 44, to avoid another job transfer (kids were nearing the end of HS and wife was establishing her own career).

I worked part-time for five years till the kids completed college. At that point (at 49) the math showed that my spouses income coupled with leftover college savings would allow me full time retirement.

Now - going on 4 years later - I couldn't be happier and I am fully enjoying the second half of my life. I now realize that work is highly overrated and I would recommend retirement to anyone!

Oh yeah, I'm in southeastern MA.

Your story is similar to mine (semiretired at 49 when I saw it was doable). I also am highly satisfied with
the decision and my situation. One difference is my
wife's career. She continues to work because we need
the income for a while yet. This has a downside as
she is not very enthused about the work she is doing,
and it restricts our options for travel together,
relocation, etc. Like my struggles with health insurance, this problem still seeks a solution. However, I can now
see the light of SS at the end of my tunnel. That will
take some pressure off.
