Golfing at mystery cherry blossom grove

I took my FIL golfing at East Potomac Park today and we stopped to admire the "mystery cherry blossom grove" featured in a story in today's Washington Post. All but 12 of the original shipment of cherry trees from Japan in 1910 was destroyed because of a bug infestation. The 12 were planted in an "experimental plot" and then forgotten in the hubub of the 1912 shipment and dedication. Park Service spokesmen say this may be the lost grove:

I saw a few cherry blossom trees the other day, when the wind hit them, the blossoms almost looked like snow.

If that was my ball and it was in that clear of a spot, that would be where I dropped it after shaking it loose from the tree limbs.

No we had just left the green (out of picture to the right) and I stopped to take the picture. The white spot is probably a goose feather - lot of them around.

Yes, it is the East Potomac Golf Course owned by the Park Service and managed by a contractor. It is at Hains Point at the foot of the 14th Street Bridge over the Potomac. They have 3 courses: Red is a par 3 executive 9 hole; White (where I took my FIL, he isn't up for 18) is a regulation 9 hole; and Blue is a regulation 18 hole. I would recommend the Blue Course on a sunny day. A couple of holes frame the Washington Monument in the distance beautifully. I will try to remember to get a picture next time I play it.

Cool, I'm going there. I used to drive to Hain's point a lot, so I know the area but as I said, I never played golf there. Too bad that statue is gone, the guy who looked like he was sinking in quicksand.

"Awakening." They sold it off to the developer of the huge hotel/convention complex "awakening" south of the Wilson Bridge on the Maryland side. I understand it is now rising from the sand in front of the main hotel there.
