At age 11 (end of 5th grade) I went to grammar school and the new friends I made did not smoke, so I gave up smoking then. However, since my parents were always very heavy smokers and the family of 6 lived in a 4 room house, I got plenty of secondary smoke until I left home at age 18.

Make you own poll then - but you won't find many Americans likely to be on this board that smoke>= a pack a day. In my high school in the fifties, almost all the girls smoked, but very few boys because we turned out for sports and smoking could get you kicked off the team.

I wish more women still smoked- I have a fetish about the taste of cigarette smoke kissing a woman, but hard to find a smoking woman any more except the young pierced punkers. I also really like smoking scenes in old movies. Wasn't Lana Turner a great smoker?

BTW, when I read the poll it reminds me of confession "Bless me father, for I have xxx'd 200 times in the last 3 months. "Good god my child, Hail Mary(s) won't help you, we might have to dust off the rack."

I like smoking hot women, but in my dating days I found that kissing a girl that smoked was like kissing an ashtray Of course, I would put up with it if I thought I would score higher than a 2*.

I'm assuming this poll applies to any type of tobacco. I occasionally smoke a pipe or cigar, but I have never even tried a cigarette (blech!).

Last week marked 33 years since I quit smoking.

For many reasons, I am so glad that I did.

Just think of the extra "mad money": During the past 33 years I did NOT smoke about 15,000 packs of cigarettes. I don't know how much cigarettes cost any more, but I am sure it adds up.

I have never smoked nor have I ever lived with anyone who indulged (other than my first semester freshman roommate who smoked like a chimney in our tiny room ). Not that I am an anti smoking nut. I have friends who smoke. I keep an ashtray outside the front door on a bench for their comfort and convenience. Smoking does not bother me much so long as it is outside...like walking with someone who is smoking or sitting at an outdoor dining spot. I think it is ridiculous to ban smoking in bars so long as the dining room is not affected. That said, I think smoking is a terrible thing for one's health and I would certainly applaud anyone who quits.

Never tried and never will try! (Other than second hand smoke.)My parents both were smokers when I was living at home but they both quite a long time ago. I always thought the smoking sections on planes was funny as if the smoke knew it could not travel to the non-smoking section!

I guess I don't think of a bar on a par with a health club. I am guessing (but don't know for sure) that most of the people who spend large amounts of time in bars are smokers or don't mind smoking. Of course, I would be in sympathy with a bar employee who could not tolerate the smoking for whatever reason. I would hope they would look for other employment. Here in western PA we have a lot of what I would call "real bars"...shot and beer places and social clubs. Many of the patrons enjoy smoking. But heck, if they outlawed smoking everywhere that would be fine with me. I don't go anywhere if something about the place bothers me.

If you want to drink or dance in a convivial atmosphere, the bar is your destination. There are many more social drinkers than smokers in America. Washington banned smoking in all public places, and it has made life much better for the almost 80% of the population that doesn't smoke. Actually, I think that in this state there are fewer than 20% smokers. And the smokers really do have fun standing out in the rain and wind getting their fixes. Such bonding!

We even have smoke free casinos.

Yes, I have the occasional cigarette, cigar or "whatever". Yes, it is bad for me. Remember that a 50 year RE means a reduced SWR. What things that you enjoy would you trade for 5 more years in the nursing home?

On the banning issue, I think the owner of a bar/restaurant/etc. should be allowed to make up his/her mind on what clientèle they want to cater to. After all, they do own the place. People who "would spend money there if" must convince them it is an economic benefit.

I really dislike being in places where I am forced to breath cigarette smoke and have walked out of client functions to avoid it. Since they banned smoking in bars etc in HK recently, I now tend to go out more (to the detriment of my waistline).

Because the bar is private property frequented only by adults, the dangers of smoking (and secondhand smoke) are well known, and because tobacco is a legal product? If most people don't smoke (true) and most non-smokers would prefer not to breathe cigarette smoke (probably also true) then clearly there is a market for non-smoking bars, they would enjoy a competitive advantage and would thrive. And if somebody wants to run a bar where smoking is permitted, they should be allowed to. And everyone in the smoking bar (including the workers) should be warned of the hazards. There--everyone gets to be free and exercise their rights like adults.

As a nonsmoker who enjoys smoke-free restaurants and other environments, I've personally benefited from the current government restrictions on smoking. But I don't think they are right.

This is a very high class sentiment. I have a hard time disapproving of anything that helps me and a hard time supporting anything that hurts me. Me is defined as my pack.
