Few miles from our house, there was a dog howling for 3 days during the day. It sounded very sad, and must have been exhausting for the dog too.

DW said maybe the owner passed away.

I am not a dog owner, so want to know if dogs do that to moan?

Did anyone call the Humane Society or the ASPCA about the dog? They would at least see if the dog had food and water and was not improperly tied up.

Shortly before we got married, DW to be got a visit from the Humane Society at her work place (they know EVERYTHING). Seems someone THREE blocks from DW's house had called them thinking a poor cat was stuck in a tree or was otherwise in distress. The HS worker cruised the neighborhood until he tracked the noise to DW's house. Apparently the cat (a siamese) was in her favorite day-perch (the small, open bathroom window) and was howling pitifully because she had just come into heat for the first time. Can you say "embarrassing"?

Caught a neighbor surreptitiously looking over my fence. I asked why. She thought she heard a cow mooing. This had made her very curious, as I live in the middle of town. It was my basset hound howling.

Dogs are pack animals. When their pack leaves them alone during the day, such as going to work, they may well howl. We found this out because we rented a carriage house, and the owner worked at home. Broke my heart when I heard our dog was in emotional distress while I was at work. Wish he had told us sooner. FI and not leaving our current pooch home alone more than absolutely necessary is a wonderful thing.

Let the owners know. Leaving behind an article of clothing that you have worn and has your scent on it, leaving the radio on, could help.

+5

I hope someone has checked on the dog.

Only time my dog ever howled for this long was because a female dog was in heat and he couldn't mate (it was his daughter). Once they experience it and can't it drives them crazy, hence the howling. This heat period is 2-3 weeks.

Don't think the male dog actually knows it is his offspring. A male dog will basically mate with anything with four legs that is in heat.:mad:

My guess is he was howling because he wasn't physically able to mate....but really wanted to.
