I did some google and amazon searches but didn't find much. Does anyone know if there is a reasonable way (not overly expensive, require major surgery, or low accuracy) to convert a standard light switch to a voice-activated one to turn an overhead light on and off?

Not sure about voice but take a look at smarthome.com. They have some cool stuff.

I don't know the answer but we solved an "inconvenient lamp across the room" issue with a small push-button remote. There are two parts (one part plugs into the outlet and the lamp is plugged into it).

Kindest regards.
