Since we seem to have people knowledgeable about many subjects here... does anyone know if impact glass has a 'soft' outside surface?
I bought a condo in Florida a few months ago. When it was first listed, there was a huge built-in hot tub (made of cement?) on the lanai dating back to when the condos were constructed.
The seller, an investment company, paid to have the hot tub jack-hammered out before I put an offer on the unit.
My condo was built in the 2003-4 time frame, so it has the then-required impact-glass (~120-130 mph).
As I was washing the sliding door windows on the lanai today, I saw hundreds of tiny spots (sizes vary -- most are about the size of a speckle of paint or a little bit larger) on the outside of the glass. I couldn't figure what these spots were.
These sliders are out of the weather, about 20 feet away from the outside screen of the lanai.
I got a razor scraper and tried scraping the spots off. I was initially expecting them to be something organic that was growing in this protected area. As I tried scraping, most of the spots diminished somewhat, but not entirely. It seems as though the 'spots' are something very hard (concrete-like) and a few sort of 'broke' when I scraped them, leaving a portion still in/on the glass. I also noticed that some of the spots seem to have tiny radiating 'spokes' in the glass from them.
I'm now wondering if these 'spots' are tiny cement fragments of the hot tub that was jack-hammered into oblivion? And the larger pieces may have actually embedded themselves into the glass (evidenced by the tiny spokes and the fact that I can't scrape them off the glass without worrying that I will add permanent scratches to the glass).
I'm also wondering if these tiny projectiles may have weakened the glass somewhat?
Or, am I entirely off-base in thinking that these spots might be fragments of the hot tub? If that's the case, might someone have an idea of what they might be?
