I received the following CD rates on a mailer from UICCU.org. Qualifiers are you must live or work in Iowa or be be a U of I graduate. There may be some other work arounds. I submitted an online application but have not heard back yet to get an account set up. These rates are higher than PenFed by quite a bit, mailer says for a limited time but no information how long they will be offering these rates. I will have to ask what the early withdrawal penalty would be.

16 Month Special $1,000 1.65%
1.75% APY if balance exceeds $100,000
1.85% APY if balance exceeds $250,000

26 Month Special $1,000 2.00%
2.10% APY if balance exceeds $100,000
2.20% APY if balance exceeds $250,000

35 Month Special $1,000 2.40 %
2.50% APY if balance exceeds $100,000
2.60% APY if balance exceeds $250,000

I poked around and found this document which further details the field-of-membership of this credit union -- as of October 2016.

An additional method of membership includes
"congregants and churches in the fellowship of the Living Word."

if I'm on the right website: " Limit one Special EasyStart Certificate per member. This offer, including the stated APY, is effective March 25, 2013. Navy Federal reserves the right to end or modify this offer at any time. Penalty for early withdrawal. The Special EasyStart Certificate has a $50 minimum balance and a $3,000 maximum balance."

meh -- Navy FCU is running a special at 3% on a 12 month CD.

Yeah, too bad I can't join or I would jump on that, oh, only $3,000 maximum, I was thinking of at least $50,000 so it wouldn't be any use anyway. NFCU looks like a maximum of 2.15% for a 7 year CD, so my alternative is actually better for me.

I have a couple of NFCU CDs maturing in Aug and I just renewed them to the 12 monther you noted above. Would like to have gotten a longer term but I'll take it for now and see what things look like in a year.

PenFed, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have deals any more.

Hmmm... Those renewals i mentioned in the previous post were for about $10K each and the NFCU web site offered me the 3% rate and accepted the transaction.

With this kind of "action" it seems likely to me that general savings rates are going to be heading up soon. I've seen it before. Maybe I'll just wait a while and not try to play too many games just to get a decent rate.

You were lucky to get that deal. I have been talking with them and searching the website constantly since April and didn't come close to anything like that. Best I could do was 2% for 12 months by adding on to an existing CD.

Thanks very much for responding. Based on your post I called NFCU to verify that this was a valid rate. They said the upper limit on this deal is $3,000. I asked why the site had apparently accepted the transaction and no good answer.

The rep said there is a special on CDs which will be announced on Monday. She either couldn't or wouldn't provide details but I am going to check it out on Monday and see what it is before deciding how to proceed. (Certs expire first week of Aug.)

Thanks again. BTW, I used to live in Laurel, MD -- many years ago during a Navy assignment near there.

Thanks for additional info. Let's see who can post details on the next special.

I got intrigued by something I read about the Langley Federal Credit Union offering 1.61% on deposit accounts. Wow! Went right out there and checked. Turned out that it was only on the first $1,000 and everything after that was just 0.05%. Ya gotta watch 'em like a hawk!

I wish NFCU would up the amount on their 3% CD. Whenever the 12 months is up, I just renew it again at 3%. You're not going to get rich off a $3,000 CD, but I like the rate and a few bucks it makes is far better than just sitting in a savings account.

Someone on another web site suggested something that makes sense to me....NFCU ran a 15 month/3% over a year ago (without the $3K limit) and those CDs start to mature Aug 1. Maybe this will be an attempt by NFCU to get folks to roll those over for a while longer? Hope so. /speculation

Last August I opened a 17 month 2% CD at NFCU with an add-on feature. I am expecting something like that or they offered some 20 month and 30 month specials that were 2% and 2.2%. I had a 30 month that matured in June.

The Navy Feseral special is apparently 5 months, 3%, $10K max. Saw it on their web site this morning.

I just maxed out on that deal with $10,000. I've never seen a 5 month CD paying 3%. That was too hard to pass up since I had money just setting in my NFCU savings account.

UICCU has pretty good CD rates. Been a member for several years. Thanks for sharing Tom52.
