Mine first job was car park Steward at Manchester city in 2009 , did it for about a month

PT - chucking newspapers. Not bad even in ND winters at 6 AM. What sucked? Having to collect $$ each month. Probably 20% of "customers" required repeat visits to get the $3 per month.

FT - shoveling rock 8 hours a day for Soo Line railroad/

PT - started cutting neighbors' lawns at age 8. Morning paper route at age 11.

FT - factory production line making fiberglass insulation during high school and university summers. Great pay. Not such a fun job.

FT, working as a clerk in a grocery store while going to college. It wasn't really full time, but I worked close to 40 hours/week for $2.50/hour.

My first "real" job was as an Associate Programmer in the Field Data Analysis department at IBM. (I was looking at my SS records recently and noticed that my wages for the first full year I worked there were the same as one year's mortgage payments on our current residence!)

Prior to that, I babysat and worked food service jobs at a tennis club and university dining commons.

First job was working at my Aunts ice cream stand. I was 14. We sold ice cream, pop corn, cotton candy, etc. It was a beach town, and on the main drag.

What a blast to live as a regular on a beach town. Too bad I was a bit young to take full advantage of it...

When I was 16, I was a dishwasher. $2.30 an hour, and all the food scraps I could eat. People throw away some great food at restaurants.

First job was in the family business.... two coin-operated car washes... one about 1/2 mile from our house and the other in an adjacent city about 7 miles away. I would check the one near home on my way to school, then drive to the other one after school and check on that one and fix anything that needed repairs and then back to the first one on my way home for supper. Working with water in the winter when is it -20F is very character building!

First job outside the family business was a dishwasher in the college cafeteria my second semester freshman year. I was the guy behind the conveyer that you put your cafeteria trays on... clean them off and load them in the dishwasher. Grossest things were people who used leftover mashed potatoes as an ash tray. Yuk.

I missed that.

On another forum that I frequent, new members have limited posting privileges for a probationary period. I don't know the details. Would it be worthwhile to institute something similar here?

My first job was in 1979 when I was 16. I was a page at the local public library. I shelved books and did other menial tasks but soon moved up to working in the magazine room in the basement, and also being the film projectionist on Friday nights in the summer. The job paid below minimum wage at the beginning but by the time I left in 1981 I was earning MW.


What I learned about libraries and the Dewey Decimal System for arranging books has been very valuable over the years. I later worked in my college library for a year as a page, this time with the Library of Congress arrangement system.
