Re: Soy or Dairy?

I find milk disgusting, and soy milk imitation-disgusting, so I drink neither.

Love cheese and ice cream, and eat tofu, natto, etc. all the time, so I get the good
and bad of both. But not in...

Re: Stephen Hawking's Artificial Voice

I think I recall him saying that someone had offered him an upgraded voice at one point, but it didn't sound like "his" voice to him anymore, so he stuck with the old Votrax (or whatever it is) voice.

Re: The danger of knowing your lifespan...

In retrospect, he should have bought an annuity, THEN lived it up on the payout from that. Fob off that annoying longevity risk on someone else.

Re: So..........When will Exxon Let me Buy This in the USA??

I have been eyeing those for years. A bit on the expensive side (also true of the non-hybrid version of the Estima), though, so it will probably be hard to justify when the time comes to replace our...

Re: How many languages can you speak/read/write fluently?

I speak, read and write Japanese all day, but would not consider myself fluent. My wife agrees, or she wouldn't hit me over the head so often for various gaffes and faux pas.

I seem to have...

Re: Are you counting mortgage principal as an expense?

I account for mortgage principle payments as a transfer from my bank account into home equity. Additionally, I depreciate the home equity a little bit each month.

Re: Stack rank asset classes by tax liability

Foreign REITs are much less tax efficient than US REITs for a US taxpayer, due to their status as PFICs. I'd put them down somewhere around Commodities Futures.

I'm not sure that foreign bonds...

Re: Conspiracy against US Forces?

It is topical in the wake of recent statements by Prime Minister Abe; first asserting that there was no proof that the Japanese government had coerced women into becoming comfort women, followed by,...

Re: International investing-- a year later

Pascal omitted the logical possibility of there being a deity or deities, but you happen to choose the wrong one to believe in. I think I at least avoided that mistake. ;)

I guess I'm more...

Re: International investing-- a year later

Japan is just one country. Any one country can have a terrible run without the rest of the world being dragged down. Which is more likely: the country you live in crashes and the rest of the world...

Sure there is, when you're the one paying the electric bills. :)

Hmm, there must be a teenager-training idea in there somewhere...

Re: International investing-- a year later

I have settled on 50/50 domestic/foreign, too. Running "Japan 1990" scenarios helped me feel comfortable with that. I suspect that if you look back in history, there were a lot more times and places...

Re: International investing-- a year later

Then again, perhaps the low international recommendations were also a form of performance chasing. Sometimes you can't win.

Re: Ethanol and the lack of Logic............

Isn't the barley used for brewing and distilling different from that used for food? The former being a two-row variety, the latter six-row, or something like that? Though I don't know what they use...

Re: International Bonds

I keep the same domestic/foreign ratio with my bonds as I do with my stocks. I think of it as providing an extra bit of insurance, and foreign bonds provide a more direct kind of currency exposure...

Re: Virginia Tech shooting and gun control

My assumption has been that that was basically the reason.

No, but if the country were invaded, the armed populace could form guerilla resistance groups, which are by no means obsolete in this...

Re: Does anyone hold international real estate in their AA?

Not any more. Got rid of both domestic and international RE allocations in the interest of tax efficiency.

Re: Last minute filing blues...

I filed in late March, and of course got a(nother) corrected 1099 right after I mailed off the return. Doesn't change the tax owed, so I'm not inclined to bother to file an amended return. I realize...

Re: WSJ: Why Your Home Is Not the Investment You Think It Is

I don't think of my home as an investment, so I guess this means that it really is.

It is a part of my net worth, but so are a lot of other things that I don't consider investments, like cars and...

Re: I was written a bad check, and need some help

That would lead to loss of information. English spelling preserves information about word origins and history. It is even an aid in learning new English words, once you have some kind of a base.

Re: Windows Vista Anti virus

I don't know, but you could ask over at the Ubuntu Forums:
They'll probably recommend ssh and sftp instead of telnet and ftp, though.

Fedora net-related permissions were...

No, seriously. I dual boot Vista and Ubuntu Linux, using the former only for particular applications that require it, but not doing anything sensitive on it. Most of my time is spent on the...

Re: Why isn't e-filing free for everyone?

Agreed. I don't buy the excuse that they "can't compete with private industry." Since when is filling out government forms the province of private industry? Somebody's palms got greased.

Re: BUYING is such an addictive behavior and is there a cure for it??

Next time you get the urge to buy something, buy a mutual fund, or stock or bond. Which can also become addicting, actually, but shouldn't be damaging.
