Coronavirus - Travel impact

For our trips, I view the flying on airplane as the most risky, very small space with a lot of people breathing recycled air for hours, At least on the cruise ship I can stand a few feet away and not sit beside other folks.

Surely the safest thing to do is just to stay home. But on our flights I will huddle into my window seat and not use the restroom (I'm pretty good that way:LOL:--London to Chicago, didn't stir from my seat, wiggled my legs every twenty minutes and wore compression stockings to keep the circulation going) or eat anything. If we had a cruise planned, I don't know if we would cancel it or not, probably not, but we don't have any cruises on the horizon at this point so it's a moot point.

Were you screened?

They checked our temperature in Phuket prior to entering the secure area in the domestic terminal and on arrival in Hong Kong from CNX. Phuket was an instrument to the forehead and HKG was some sort of thermal scanner of everyone passing through gate after immigration. I guess that constitutes screening.

They checked temperatures on that Westerdam cruise ship instead of doing the genetic PCR tests.

What are the odds that the cruise ship had thousands of thermometers or infrared scanners?

Uh Oh!

Two passengers from the Diamond Princess (docked in Yokohama) just died.

Both are Japanese nationals, and in their 80s.

No worries, just the flu, bro. Let them all off the ship and they can take the subway to the airport.

In the health thread there's some reasonable speculation that it will take about a month before the cruise ship microcosm statistics will stabilize. But a month from now is not too far away from my planned air travel!

Yikes! I think I might have to walk away from my plans.

Somewhere, I shared the news that North Korea increased from 2 weeks to 30 days the quarantine period required of North Korean repatriated from China. This was perhaps 1 week ago.

Kim Jong-un also closed the border with China quite early, before any other country I think.

Perhaps he knew something, that Kim Jong-Un.

I suspect that NK closed the border in part because they really, really do not have the resources to deal with an outbreak. We are potentially talking about revolution, failure of the state, death of a hefty chunk of the population. The population is malnourished, healthcare is rudimentary, and the regime maintains control via ruthless killing and total control of media/information.

Yes. But they rely on China for trade, as they are a pariah state and under sanctions.

I mean, the virus condition must be very bad for them to do this. They are next door to China, and have first hand knowledge of the situation.

Well, everyone knows bio warfare is the poor man's nuke.... Maybe it was the new weapon he was talking about... and needed testing...

From NWTimes:

...an 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman, They were taken to hospitals on Feb. 11 and 12, and both had underlying health issues.

Just a little over a week from hospital admission to death... Assuming they started getting sick a couple of days before their hospital admission, that's still only about 10-11 days...

By the way, most people in their 80s have some kind of underlying health issues, don't they?

Yeah, maybe he knows what China knows but we don't know.

Most people in NK are so malnourished that I don't think they would fare well if they contracted the coronavirus. Kim Jong-un also has serious health issues of his own, from what I understand.

It sounds from Wasington Post that health issues on one of the passengers on Diamond Princess who died wasn't being attended to in a timely manner. I bet there are so many other cases like that.

An 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman died of the new coronavirus on Thursday, while another 27 people from the ship are in serious condition.

But officials had no immediate explanation as to why the woman who died had to wait a week between falling ill with a fever on Feb. 5 and finally being hospitalized on Feb. 12.

The woman also developed diarrhea on Feb. 6, which is when a doctor first visited her. She tested positive for the virus on Feb. 13, developed respiratory problems the following day and died on Thursday morning, eight days after being transferred to a hospital.

But it is not the only incident indicating how doctors have struggled to cope with the situation on board the ship, as cases of the virus have multiplied.

An American man, John Haering, 63, says he came down with a fever of up to 39.8 degrees Celsius (103.6 Fahrenheit) in the evening of Monday, Feb. 10, but was not seen by a doctor until 5 p.m. the following day. It was not until Feb. 13 that he was evacuated from the ship and taken to a hospital. His fever had subsided by then.

The man who died on Thursday suffered from bronchial asthma. He developed a fever on Feb. 10, was tested and hospitalized the following day, developed pneumonia on Feb. 18 and died two days later.

Sad yet if you are 87 have bronchial issues and get a bad case of the "regular" flu, your odds of making it through are pretty low.

Thanks for that detailed info. I feel so badly for people stuck on that ship getting inadequate medical care, and being continually exposed to the virus!

Another news article said that he also had angina pectoris, so I'm sure that didn't help the situation any.

No, my 81 yo husband is as healthy as a 20 yo.

My trust in China being honest about anything is absolutely zero. Very sad situation.

A friend of mine just jumped on deals to Vietnam. It seems that with Chinese tourism down, the tourist prices are down. He had not planned any more travel until Summer at the earliest, but he could not resist.

The CDC just issued a travel advisory for Japan (Level 1 out of Level 3, with China at Level 3).

Level 1: "These precautions include avoiding contact with sick people and cleaning hands. The agency also advises people to seek medical advice if they have spent time in Japan during the last two weeks and feel ill with fever or respiratory symptoms."

Yesterday they issued an advisory for Hong Kong.

As of now, still cruising to the islands in June.
Perhaps if enough folks cancel, there will be discounts.

Norwegian announced earnings this morning and fessed up to cancelling a bunch of sailings in Asia with some financial impact. They mentioned some evidence of customers being a little leery of booking cruises, but swept the whole thing under the rug as being very temporary. Just the flu, bro. Stock ended the day down almost 7%.

Frank Del Rio is the same CEO who led Renaissance to bankruptcy after 9/11. Passengers on Seven Seas Voyager which has had a two day stop in Bangkok were told that the cruise has been cancelled immediately (tomorrow 22nd) instead of ending 1 March in Manilla. Having past experience with that ship being cancelled I wonder how long it will take to get all pax home (they had offered cancellations before the cruise so only around 200 pax).

Even though a lot of passengers are scared and cancelling any cruise I don't think a lot of bargains will be found; so much inventory needs to be repositioned first and then the fire sales can begin.
