Many of you don't w*rk but . . .u ready to go back?

I thought most (if not almost all) of us don't work...hence, the name of the site.
Or is your question really, Now that you have lost so much of your investments, are you planning to go back to work now? My answer is no

My 2 year retirement anniversary is June 1. Megacorp has contacted me a few times about coming back. Three different organizations have offered and so far I have had no interest. However, one manager contacted me this past weekend and asked again about some contract work. It is a low stress gig and I am thinking about it. Sequence of returns risk looks like more than a risk right now. If the markets just move sideways from here for a year or two it wouldn't be a problem but we don't know what will happen.

I am turning 60 in May so I could start SoSec in two years but I don't want to be forced into it by a stubborn recession if I can return to work part time, make good money and either leave the nest egg alone, or add to it for a while.

No decision yet but those are my thoughts.

A lot of our members are ER-hopefuls, still working, but planning. So we're far from being close-to-all actual ERs. I don't know the stats, but I try to be cognizant of both groups when I post.

I retired in 2003 at age 52 and can honestly say that it was the second best decision of my life (my DW is #1). Although it has been a up and down ride economically I can testify that the Firecalc estimation was 100% accurate. Although I didn't do well in the 2008 downturn because I had too much invested in my prior companies stock the financial side has been "almost" a worry-free experience.

Going back to work? In my case the technology (RF Engineer) has changed so much that I would not be able to assume my former role (Regional Operations Director) simply because the workplace has so dramatically changed. The last few years of my employment the transition of being a "cost" center versus a "profit" center I think was a major mistake. I didn't see it then and I think history has shown it was not good for the industry. You simply cannot exclude profit/cost at a local level and be successful.

I'm happy to leave Corporate America to the powers that be and hope that they will be successful. My main goals these days tend to be personal and health related - finances are not in my top 5 issues.

Peace and Love!!

7 months in. Worldwide bucket list travel plans are now scrapped. I’m blessed enough to bring home the same thing I did when I was working so there is no way in H E double hockey sticks I’m going back.

Work ! How dare you use that four letter word on this forum. Mods, ban him !

No way would I go back.

No way either DH or I are going back into the office. DH is high risk and plans to retire this year anyway. Any mention of going back into the office and he's filing his retirement application. He's stuck at home until there is a vaccine or containment.

I had been approved for FT telework about 2 years ago. Due to increased telework the office reconfigured the work space and we were all sitting way too close to each other. AND, 3 people in that building were diagnosed with COVID as of 2 weeks ago. They are still trying to work out how to sanitize the entire building so even for the people that do work there it will be a long time until they are allowed to go back.

I'm in the same boat as your DH. Plan A was to retire at the end of this year.

Currently WFH with no indication when they plan to call us back. They can't do it now because we are all under a stay at home order anyway.

BUT - when they do call us back, I will request WFH for the remainder of the year, and if they don't grant it I will give two weeks' notice.

I'm not risking my health when I am this close to freedom!

One son-in-law is still working but the office is divided into Group A and Group B and only one group is in the office each week to manage distancing. Their security requirements mean it's not work you can do at home :-( You're only paid the week you're there but the people are allowed to work up to 18 hours a day that week.

I don't know your work status but something like this might work for some other companies. It's obviously not possible to run a small assembly line with every other worker missing but many office environments could work - or could easily be adapted to work- with alternate half-staffing.

I planned on a 50% drop in my investments before FIRE. Haven't hit that yet so no plans on going back to w*rk. My situation is much different than others.:D

I was planning to semi-retire now I am 60.. then last week was offered a dream executive role right in my wheelhouse that is expanding massively due to Covid-19. (There are some) It makes sense for me to pile additional earnings into investments while the market is low. That I really want to do this job tells me I am not ready. I am doing an absolutely terrible job of this retire early business.

I won't look hard. However, if there is an opportunity drops on my lab I will seriously consider it.

No going back to w@rk. I will scrap future travel plans and focus my life in my great hometown area. I still have my RV and may take it for a trip or two in 2021. Nothing major, just get out of the city and hit some state parks when they open up.

Retired several years ago. No plans to touch the investments for at least 5-8 years. Fortunate to have planned to have multiple income streams and 5 years of available cash to cover any unexpected expenses. So....no [emoji4]

I guess that I am the outlier again. I volunteer. I and DW went every day to our grandkids school to help the kindegartners learn to read.. I volunteer for helping with political candidates locally. That was mainly schools and school boards. The call came out for census workers. Decent pay, and Trump's tariffs hit our investments especially hard before we reallocated to the new reality. I and DW decided that a limited stint doing census work would refill grammy's spoil-the-kids funds and were hired. We are still waiting to start work though.

Then schools closed. We became home schoolers/daycare for our grandchildren. Regular daycare is too risky. SIL is a kidney transplant recipient and high risk for complications if hit with CV-19. The grandchildren need their daddy. The money that our daughter and son are saving on childcare helps fund their FIRE.

We also started a pleated face mask sewing home factory. I designed and customized jigs for pleating. Then we started sewing. Our grand daughter wanted to learn to sew and is good at it. We give family members masks and donate most to the local hospital. We sell a few to cover costs and give the granddaughter a way to be an entrepreneur. Her first sale gave her a $50 profit. She made a school report over how to sew masks for a school assignment that gave her some recognition by her teachers. She got to try the working life and discovered that she likes money and recognition of doing a good job. It's a win.

We will wrap that business up soon. Material shortages because so many are volunteering are letting us to turn the work over to others. Then on to become census workers.

The TL/DR is : So yes, in the right circumstances, why not?

I've been off for about three weeks. Retirement date had already been planned for June 1st. Supposedly we are set to return to work May 1st. This might happen but our restart will be staggered and methodical.
My hope is I just wont be going back at all.
Although I miss some of my coworkers, I haven't missed the J.O.B. one bit!

With zero desire to go back to work was offered a consulting gig back in Mid February that would have started in March. For the money, travel, award miles etc it seemed worthwhile so I agreed. Obviously it didn’t happen and I am so grateful. What was I thinking?

I’m w*rking from home but I had planned to make my last day July 1 and start a nice, long, travel sabbatical with DW. Obviously, the trip ain’t happening but I still might be leaving the job. Times are tough and management is cooking up some kind of buyout plan.

Since the original thread intents been hijacked anyway....
Inappropriate sense of humor + FU Money - obsolete skills = no one should hire me.
