Have you ever been fired (lower case)

Nope, never... somewhat surprised that it never happened, but never.

ETA:. I did have a summer job painting machinery between my sophomore and junior years of college that was boring and miserable. After a few weeks we agreed to part ways, but I wasn't fired... we just both realized that it wasn't working out for either of us.

Yes!! I had a date and switched shifts with a guy. Who didn't show up. Next time I came to work they told me switching shifts was verboten (??) And fired me. I worked there maybe 2 months? And the date was a dud. I think I was 16 at the time

Oh and I almost got downsized from a partying job but I was like that's funny o was going to tell you we are PCSing soon and I would work till the end of the month. Boss said fine. Threw me a party even. I was a good employee but 2008 economy was not so good and I was her (highly paid) assistant. I negotiated more pay than her superiors had planned on it found out.

Only once. In what I now consider a moment of temporary insanity, after retirement I applied for a job as a car salesman. This was something that would be brand new to me and that I'd never tried before. It turns out that while I have many talents, sales is not one of them. In the six weeks or so that I was there I didn't sell a single car, new or used. In some defense, my timing could have been better since I picked the spring of 2008 to do this experiment; one of the "old-timers" there said he hadn't seen things so bad for ten years.

Anyway, when I was told to clean out the desk (there wasn't much) it was a relief and I was laughing as I drove out of the parking lot.

i wasn't laid off, but we got a new Director of Engineering who valued "face time", like on weekends. I saw the handwriting on the wall, and left.
Two weeks later the FBI raided the place during the "Ill Wind" Investigation. The VP of Marketing, VP of finance, and one other higher up all went to jail:D

Fired/laid off in 1995 from a great job. Got a new boss who stated in his 2nd week that he wishes to replace all my managers, but NOT me. BS - he manufactured stuff to get rid of me. Did get a 6 figure severance package though and got another job within 2 months.

I volunteered for a package at my last job with a full year severance and benefits. Couldn't get another job within 15 months, but then realized I could retire.

Edit - The boss left his job eventually and went to the firm I went to (different area) and he got laid off there. lol

Never terminated for cause (performance or behavior) but terminated 4 times. Had 8 jobs after school. Four fired me and I fired 4 of them.

We're even!

Worked for a while as a tech at an auto dealership - noticed they had cameras up staring down at the work areas. Longer I worked there the more it rankled. Finally took a long underground tank measuring stick and pushed the cameras up so they viewed the ceiling. and that was the end of my auto-tech career.

Not really Fired in a sense that I had to pack things up on the spot. But I didn't like the work situation enough and told them "I resign and it will be effective in one year", so I can look for another job and they can find my replacement. It worked.

7 years into a military career, my FIL talked me out of reenlisting and instead coming to work for him and his business partner at his company. My first clue there was gonna be problems was that when I moved us to where they were, I was told I was going to have to interview and might not get the job. WTF?! Got the job. They built commercial sound equipment used for everything from airport PA systems, Large Vegas venues, rock concerts, etc. I discovered they were having financial problems when my son was born and the medical insurance premiums were not being paid to the provider. Later discovered they were not sending my taxes to the state. When I confronted him and his partner, they replied by going to a convention for NAMM. (National Association of Music Merchants) The next day at the end of the day, an accountant met me at my desk with an envelope and told me it was my final pay and to hand over the keys. In the envelope was a check and a note from my FIL saying he was sorry it was done this way, blah, blah, blah. He didn't just fire me, I can handle that. He tossed his daughter and his two grand children out without any income, medical, etc. We lost the house, car, got into severe debt but eventually bounced back. If it were me, he'd never have had heard from any of us, wife and grand kids included, ever again. I packed us up and was moving to Arkansas when I got an interview with the electric company. I started at almost double my pay, got right with the creditors and became an advocate for financial independence.

In the end, I let my wife decide how we would handle them as far as visits, etc. She's very forgiving....
Eventually he lost the business and died pennyless, having to have his brothers pay him forward for putting them as beneficiaries on his life insurance policy for cash and living with his sister who is a nurse in Seattle area. Forgot to mention, his wife was his business partner.

Age 14, sacking groceries. Had to depend on others for rides to work and I was late a couple of times. Next job was closer to the house so I could ride my bike.

I was laid off from my job in my mid 40s after 23 years with Megacorp and in the middle of a recession. Fortunately, I was offered a severance which bridged the gap. I was off for a while and it did take a toll on my self worth given that I had a DW and kids in high school and a mortgage. However, I ended up getting a position at another company where I became far more successful than would have been my previous company and basically allowed me to build FI wealth. So things sometimes work out for the best.

Oh come on you all no one fired for cause yet? No scorched earth?

I'll go first. I was 20 I think? Worked evenings at a hotel front desk. Boyfriend lived in another state but was visiting for the weekend. I marked an unoccupied room as unavailable, and we snuck up there at the end of my shift, and we went and had a little party. Somehow the late manager got wind... and we got booted out around 2am.

Was formally fired on the Monday but was allowed to say I resigned for HR purposes, so that was nice of them. Within 3 weeks, I had a job paying 25% more, which became my 25+ year career.

Lol! Your manager didn't have any heart.

Never been fired or laid off.

I was fired one time from a consulting job. Owner suggested I do something immoral and illegal to get a sub-job done for a few hundred dollars. I had it done legally and his bill was over $5000. He was pissed when I handed him that one! When they fired me I negotiated a payout of 90% of my contract, but only had completed about 60% of the work so I was happy with that.

I finally had enough of one job and walked out and never went back. A few days after I quit I got a certified letter saying I had been fired. Whatever, at least I can collect unemployment if they say I was fired. The other time I was fired was after I hurt myself on the job and couldn't do the work anymore. They had me do light duty work for months then one day without notice they called me in for a meeting and said I was fired and they walked me out.

Yep. Got hired to work for someone who was pretty laid-back. When I started a month later, I had a new boss. She was a micro manager and I couldn't deal with it. Company announced a new location and asked for volunteers to move. I volunteered. They asked me why and I told them the truth. I think I told them that she was crazy and I couldn't work for her. Lesson learned for the rest of my working career. Telling the truth may not be in your best interests with your employer! Keep yo mouth shut!

Megacorp transferred me from Midwest to West Coast as a junior engineer and offered a relocation bonus paid out over 2 yrs. after a year and a half they laid me off but I managed to get hired by a sister division across town. A week later the sister division was shut down completely so i went into the layoff pool. Back in those days the severance was graduated over 2 yrs since they really expected to rehire on short notice. I moved back home to the east coast for six months but I was still getting the final relocation bonus plus layoff benefits and unemployment. When megacorp called to see if I was interested in going back to the Midwest, I certainly was. That job lasted 33 yrs.

Wow. I have a buddy who is close to retirement, he sells supplies to commercial printing operations. The whole industry is circling the drain. He tells some similar stories, but none involve family.

I fell to the temptation of running my mouth more often than I should have when I was younger. That in itself never got me fired, but I was fortunate to have some bosses who appreciated my wry wit. :D

Once I got aboard with a "destination" employer that paid a middle-class wage, I toned it down quite a bit.

Aerides, charming story, just what an adventurous 20 yo may do...

Street, exactly right! No heart, and it's much better to work for people with heart - what was the hotel going to do with the empty room anyway :)

Good that you never got fired or laid off; me neither, and now I am kind of a boss who can only fire himself. Often I think of capitial FIRE, but it's turning into a bit of a problem for me as some folks like to continue to work with me, and since I like some of them and much of my work too, I am wondering when I'll really get to do my FIRE... I'm currently a serious case of OMY syndrome  Maybe I have to wait for the next round of overbearing bureaucratic nonsense that seems to come in waves to ease me into the decision.

Never fired, but demoted a few times, and passed over several times. Clawed my way back up top several times, performance always outweighed the politics.

Yes. I got shitcanned . I deserved it.

I had a sales gig and I quit going to work , didnt produce any results and got fired. I deserved it too. I always said if I ever got in a financial position to do so I'd find the guy thay owned the company and repay him the few thousand I took from him without earning it.

I learned a lot from the experience and have spent the rest of my work life being a decent /good employee

At Megacorp through the 80's, when they wanted to cut heads they ran a retirement incentive program. In 1993 they changed to a new plan of involuntarily "excessing" people. There was a meeting to explain the new program, after which everyone was going to be called in to hear their status.

I had the first message to come in for this appointment, and when I said it did not seem like a good thing to be first, there was a long spell of silence. I was given 60 days notice of termination. The 60 days was to give people time to find another job. I was 33 and pretty scared of course. Those who were on notice were to have priority for any positions that might be open internally, but after the first month I had not landed anything inside or outside the co.

Shortly into the second month, I had a shot to interview for an inside position as an automotive paint tech rep, where I would work inside the customer's auto assembly plant, a big change for me. Apparently, years ago when I was in a Megacorp training class, I caught the attention of the personnel manager that gave the class, and he steered the opening toward me. I was a chemical engineer, which the other applicants were not, and the hiring manager liked that so I got the offer.

We had to move with the kids to NJ, and I had to deal with the very different environment, but I was glad to retain my tenure in the same co. as it greatly affected benefits. I ended up putting in a total of 37 years at the Magacorp, but never looked at them in the same way anymore. It was ultimately a perverse benefit to have been in the first wave. In future rounds of "excessing", there were not many openings for people to try for.
