2020 Fed Tax Refund Received!

A data point for those who filed by paper. I sent my return by certified mail on Friday, 2/19/21. The USPS tracking service says it was delivered to IRS Ogden on Monday, 2/22/21. Today, I received the return post-card which is stamped 3/4/21. So it looks like it is taking them about 10 days just to open the mail. As of yesterday 3/29/21, the IRS "Where's my refund?" tool did not have any information for me. My conclusion is that it is taking them longer than 25 days to go from mail opening to getting the return into the system.

Just as a follow up. I got my refund yesterday. Electronic filing Feb 15th, so 7 weeks to get it.

DFs refund was deposited today. I’m pretty sure his tax preparer eFiled around March 24 or so.

That was fast!

I'm in the same boat. Sent ours about 2/15, kicking myself that I didn't send it certified. Nothing on IRS site. I would have e-filed but I have one QBI form that turbo tax and/or IRS won't do electronically.

E-filed both today and both were accepted in 2 hours. Both had refunds and both refunds were applied to this years taxes.

Woo-hoo, less dough to send out tomorrow!

Received my Fed refund, and it had $3k more than expected. Got a letter a few days later that showed they changed my return to add an additional $3k credit to taxes paid. I don't know where it came from as there were no details, and I checked 2019 and 2020 again to make sure I did not meet stimulus income level (too high), so still confused.

IDK, will just hold it and repay if they come back later I guess.

Filed 6-7 weeks ago and only received GA refund, not Fed. No stimulus checks either. Pretty sure it's because of the backdoor ACA changes for 2020, IRS is still trying to fix it so that we won't have an APTC underpayment penalty (I filed before the law was passed). Lack of 2020 return finalized means no stimulus checks.

That's my working theory, I'm not concerned about it.

Does the additional refund amount equal your 2020 Form 8962 line 27 or line 29? If so it may be due to a provision in ARPA about APTC repayment forgiveness.

I sent in "paper return ~5 weeks ago.. USPS tracking said they got it in about 3 days... Still no indication it's has been, or is being, processed...

I went back to look and no form 8962 in filing. I assume because I am working and covered by MC Healthcare (not Marketplace Healthcare).

Unfortunately I filed right before TT made the correction for the ACA PTC change. I wasn't aware of it until I saw it here after I filed. The IRS states that they will correct the return (a $12K payment to a $1K refund), but who knows when. I'm not holding my breath, but at least they haven't transferred the $12K out of my account so there is that...

I filed electronically and the IRS accepted the return on February 18th. Checking the IRS website weekly -- the status was always -- return is being processed. Checked this morning and the status is now, refund approved with the payment to be sent to our bank by the end of the week.

Now, we need our stimulus payment to arrive and we will be very happy.

Congratulations!
They sure didn’t drag out the ACH withdrawal from my checking account. For 2021 I expect a refund since we have more control over this year.
Enjoy your refund!

Made me check IRS2go. Now showing refund will be in checking account this week. Filed by mail around first week of March. No indication on 3rd stimulus check though.

I filed my fed return electronically on 13 Feb, finally today IRS web shows that on 15 April it was processed. I let them keep my small refund, and nothing showing on our stimulus.

Thanks for that info, Gumby. Did my 2020 taxes on paper. Mailed them in March 1, 2021. Expecting exactly $600 in paper check refund due to having to claim the $600 stimulus on tax form. Have been checking irs.gov wheresmyrefund every couple of weeks. Always says 'no information' and tells me to make sure I have entered my info correctly. Hopefully just stuck in big stack awaiting processing.

Filed online, accepted 2/19, refund finally on its way and due in my account tomorrow. Seems that the IRS is clearing some of the logjam.

We're now getting the same refund (within a couple of dollars) that I submitted before the new PTC law went into effect, deposited by tomorrow. I would have expected that refund to increase by $280 ($650 underpayment penalty - $370 foreign tax credit we had) but I think it didn't because we also deducted the net cost of our HI from my DW's self-employment income. My guess is that given the complex calc involved there it made it a wash, basically, because the HI deduction is impacted by the PTC.

I'm certainly not going to file an amended return, just glad to get the refund. Hopefully stimulus payments will soon follow.

Mystery Solved, I was flagged for ID theft

I filed electronically on Feb 21 with Turbotax. Status has been "in process" since then. I received a letter yesterday ( LTR 5071C) from the IRS stating that I had to verify my identity before they could process my return. I went to the IRS web site and provided the information that they needed. Good news is that I know what's going on with the refund. The not so good news is that they stated that it would be 9 weeks before I see the refund. :(

I finally broke down and called last week. As it turn out, our tax return was in the 2/12 black hole because we paid quarterly estimated tax under my husband's SSN and sent the return in with my SSN as primary. I guess when this happens they have to manually transfer the quarterly payments to the primary account. When a return came in with this situation it was set aside until there was someone to do the transfer free to work on it. A couple of days after I called, the transfer was accomplished and a direct deposit date of May 5 set.

We did not qualify for stimulus based on 2019 because of RMDs. We do qualify for 2020 since we did not take the RMDs. The delayed processing of our return resulted in 2019 being used for stimulus. I am waiting to see if this gets updated or if we will need to put it on next years tax return.

Filed without a CPA for the first time since 1985!

Received refund in 10 days. H&R Block offered a 3.5% bonus to take it as an Amazon gift card.

I thought about that, but I get 5% cash back when I use my Chase Amazon card, so that would have actually cost me money.
