Travel hopes for 2022

I'm planning to go somewhere warm in January or so. I live in Europe so southern Spain is the easiest. But also checking out Asian and Caribbean locations. I find checking the various Covid-19 rules and risks are taking a bit of an effort.

DW and I want to do 3-4 weeks in Europe in the spring. Likely some combination of Italy, Spain and Portugal. Maybe France. Hard to decide.

Even Andalusia can be cold I think. I was once in Granada in February and it was of course very cold.

Maybe better along the coast like Malaga or along the SE like Valencia.

Never been but the Canary Islands are suppose to get warm.

We are going to Mexico next month. I got the booster shot today, primarily for the travel purpose.

I just booked airfare for a trip into Venice and out of Rome around 3 weeks later. The plan is to fly into Venice and spend a few days there. Then get to Split Croatia and take a 7 day coastal cruise. Island hopping down to Dubrovnik. Hop a flight to Rome and rent a car for the 2 hour drive north for a week in Tuscany. After that, drive back to Rome. Turn in the car and spend 3 or 4 days in Rome, then fly home. That's the plan anyway. We got the flights but I'm still working on details in the middle.

Sounds like a great trip. May I ask for more details on the cruise? What kind of ship?

We've made no reservations yet but I'm looking at splurging a bit and booking outfits with smaller but semi-Lux cruise ships that holds no more than 36-40 guests.

So far DGF and I have booked a 7 day Caribbean cruise out of New Orleans in March. This is a cruise we often take with friends as an excuse to scuba dive in Cozumel and Roatan.

We are already booked for our annual 4 week dive trip to Bonaire in April/May.

Also booked a 7 day cruise to Bermuda in September with a few friends. Mostly the same crew that will go with us on the March cruise and were with us on last month's 11 day Med cruise.

We still need to book one more cruise in 2022 which DGF earned through her travel business. Looking at Nov/Dec just for some warmth.

2023 we will do our usual 4 weeks diving in Bonaire in Apr/May and have booked a 10 United Kingdom cruise. Still deciding on the rest.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for a backpacking trip in Tasmania and spending some time in Australia. Australia which is opening up by State complicates the opportunity. But, we are holding on to these plans for now as Australia in general is moving in the opening-up direction.

Europe in summer 2022. I think the chances are 50/50...not because of virus issues but because of ongoing restrictions on Americans.

Uzbekistan was planned right before travel shut down so it is probably our first trip idea. Fall 2022 would be the first time to attempt it the situation is too fluid to want to make any plans right now.

Germany October 2021 was so successful...now it is time to plan for 2022. Hoping for Italy, Mediterranean cruise maybe. We could be talked into anything in Europe. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with shut-downs and so on.

My local travel agency now sell vacations to America and I'm looking at sunny January possibilities. Which mainly consist of Miami and Mexico.

I would appreciate any views of where to go since I live in Europe and both Miami and Mexico are places I've never been.

Miami is great in January. Love the weather. I don't have much experience with Mexico (only been to Cancun and Cozumel on cruises) but planning to spend several months in Mexico this winter/spring so I'll hopefully be able to tell you more. From Europe, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have been getting shellshocked with violent crime from the drug cartels so it's something to be aware of. Statistically the crime numbers aren't so crazy, but it's just very eye-opening that it's happening so openly and brazenly in the tourist areas. People on the ground are reporting that major national military presence has moved in to try to stem the tide so hopefully we will see improvements. Even as it is I'm personally not afraid to go visit, but I will be watching to see if things get worse...cause if they do then yes, I might change my tune.

Miami is warmer than most anywhere in January, but it depends what you're coming for. If it's beach and pool and sun...eh, a toss up. It can just as easily crack 80f as sit around 60f for a week.

Still, most of the rest of the US is envious, but it's not exactly the month for a tropical paradise. Further south for that.

They got nuts down in Miami. Several anger issues for flights departing Miami, the latest one where someone threatened to slap the s--- out of the flight attendant if she didn't shut up about masks.

Flight delayed while they got the guy arrested.

As for Mexico, some gangs had a shootout near an International hotel, either Marriott or Hyatt. This was near Cancun.

These are not typical but yes happen.

Thank you all - good pointers to discuss with my friend before we decide.

It was the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun. 5-star all-inclusive resort. Thankfully it was NOT a shootout, basically one cartel ambushing two rivals, who were killed execution style. Had it been a shoot-out there likely would have been collateral damage to innocent bystanders, like what happened in downtown Tulum just a few weeks prior.

The most worrisome aspect is that the handful of cartels that control this region have stated via notes and warnings that they aren't afraid to do this moving forward. In the past cartels were always careful to keep the tourist areas safe but apparently not anymore.

That said, again, the federal govt appears to be taking this threat seriously for now. We've got plans to pass through Cancun in February...for now I'm still planning to do so although we've shortened the length of the stay.

Current plans are for six week in Panama in Jan/Feb. Perhaps an addition two weeks in Costa Rica.

Eight weeks in Greece/Cyprus in May/June. Failing that Portugal/Spain. No idea about a Sept/Oct trip yet.

Watching covid stats and restrictions in both areas. We do not plan on buying air or making any travel commitments until 7-10 days prior to departure.

I had a really hoped to go on an African safari this year. I think until vaccination rates in the continent get to a reasonable level that is on hold.

I'm now looking a Scandinavian tour maybe a cruise.

My friends just got back from a 3 week Viking cruise up the Danube, starting at Vienna I believe. They had 120 passengers on the ship, capacity 200. All fully vaccinated, and tested before boarding. None the less a dozen passengers got Covid, and were taken off the cruise and some of whom were allowed to reboard after testing negative for a couple of days.

Well, we did extensive traveling in 2021, Mexico, HI and 15 states. I contracted COVID when I got home and I was vaccinated. We intend to do a lot of traveling next year too.

I've been looking at a HA trip early in the year.

It is so expensive, at least $300-400 a night for places to stay, after all the taxes and various fees are added up.

Then car rentals are $150-200 a day for small cars.

With airfare, dining and other on the ground expenses, a 2-week trip would approach $10k

You can spend a lot less for similar duration in other places, but it won't have that Hawaiian weather when it's winter in the US.

Well I don't know about FL or other parts of the Caribbean.

I spent less for trips in January and February to Australia and New Zealand.

I think maybe somewhere like Thailand would also cost far less, though they currently make you jump through a lot of hoops to visit as tourists right now.

Sure you can do a BTD trip to Hawaii but it feels like you're paying very high prices because travel restrictions and other pandemic effects, such as the high rental car prices, have made HA a bad value.

Paying those prices is one thing but you're talking about 30-40 year old resorts or condos which look very outdated or dilapidated and almost $200 a day for very modest compact cars.

And the weather may not be great on an island like Kauai. Wait a couple of months and weather improves but probably demand increases so the prices are more out of whack.

And from April on, Europe would be a better value with good weather.

Has anyone been to HA in the past 6 months or even the past year?
