I won't rehash it all from last week's thread (link below, nothing new there), but where we thought DW somehow dodged the Covid infection bullet - nope. My Day 0 was last Saturday and I came out of CDC recommended isolation yesterday. DW tested negative several times last week as late as Thursday. But she started feeling sick yesterday, and today she tested Covid positive. So she gets to do the 5 day isolation plus 5 days with a mask - on top of mine last week.

Just when you think we're out of the woods.

But again, we're grateful we were both double vaccinated and boosted - I am sure that's made this quite a bit easier.

I hope your wife gets through this without too much discomfort and both of you have no lingering effects. I bet she could use her favorite special treat while she is isolating.

Cheers!

We just went through all of this too. Both multi vaxxed. Careful as can be. Symptoms similar to a mild flu with a cold. I think if you are gonna get it, you’ll get it.

I think I've read most of us will get it sooner or later, we have years to go - at least. So while we certainly weren't being careless or trying to get it, it's almost a relief to get it overwith - assuming this means we have better resistance than we had with vaccines only.

I wonder how many of us will get it again?

Oh joy...
How often can you get COVID-19?

Public health experts used to think that, once you got COVID, you were protected from another infection for at least three months. But that’s not really the case anymore, Dr. Russo says.

“We thought you were good for three months in terms of waning immunity but we’ve learned that the variant is critical as well,” he says. “People who might have gotten Delta are at risk of Omicron. The same is playing out with people who got BA.1 over the holidays—BA.2 and BA.2.12.1 shows up and they’re getting infected with those variants.”

In general, Dr. Adalja says, reinfections “will usually be separated by several months to a year.” But, he adds, “With a virus like SARS-CoV-2, and the current vaccine technologies, I think that reinfections are unavoidable.”

How to protect yourself from a COVID-19 reinfection

The ways of protecting yourself from a COVID reinfection are similar to how you’d protect yourself from a first COVID infection, Dr. Russo says. “Get vaxxed to the max and, when there’s high community burden of disease, avoid risky situations and wear a mask,” he says. “Our vaccines are imperfect against preventing infections, but that is your best strategy.” (See our guide to the best N95 and KN95 masks).

Dr. Russo cautions against relying on immunity from a previous infection. “If you’ve been infected previously, your best protection is packaging that with vaccination,” he says. “You shouldn’t feel like, ‘I’ve had COVID, this is behind me and it’s all good.’ That’s just not the reality.”

"vaxxed to the max"
Great quote :)
won't stop it, but will help, along with masking and social distance. Same guidance as before.

Just got back from my second booster.

I was supposed to visit DS, DDIL and the kids this weekend but DDIL called Thursday AM and said the kids weren't feeling well. One had a mild fever, the others were less active and not eating well but I was still welcome to visit... I've still got a lingering cough from a trip to Europe (home COVID test was negative) and no, we didn't need to swap diseases. Yesterday AM DDIL reported that they were much better but they'd get tested. Yesterday evening DS called. The 8-year old and the 3-year old tested positive. The 5-year old tested negative but who knows?

It's the second case for the 8-year old; we missed Thanksgiving because everyone but the 3-year old got it. Parents are vaccinated, kids are not.

We're gonna be dealing with this for a long time, I'm afraid. I've escaped it so far but I figure eventually it will catch up with me. All we can hope for are mild cases with no long-term effects.

Wishing your DW a quick and complete recovery.

Unfortunately you don’t get much additional protection, and no additional protection against new variants. I’ve had family members (vaccinated adults, unvaccinated kids) get reinfected almost exactly 90 days later with a new variant - Delta then Omicron probably BA.2.

So for 3 additional months, maybe, you’ve extended your protection.

Unfortunately it’s coming down to how many reinfections a year can people live with.

DD has had similar experience in her household. Youngest turn positive on a Sat after a double exposure at school the week before. He had just turn 5 and DD had him vax ed the day after his BD. The vax did help keep symptoms mild.
Day after DGS went positive his sister, also vaxed and 7, turned positive and then 4 days later, (next day after DGD). Oh wait, the saga continues. Through all this DSIL had some symptoms but tested negative until about 10 days after DGS. He is now on day 2 of being positive. Good news no one has had any symptoms beyond fatigue and flue.
Overall, their household will end up with nearly 3 weeks of Covid in the house.

I started having cold/flu-like symptoms on Tuesday. I had similar symptoms a few months ago and tested and was negative so I didn't think much of it. DW pressured me to test and I did and lo and behold I tested positive. DW tested negative so we split up within the house... she got the main floor and I moved to the guest quarters.

It didn't work.. she tested positive this morning.

So far, no big deal... just like a minor cold... sore throat, mild cough, occasional runny nose, etc. I didhave the chills for about 8 hours at the very start.

You were likely contagious before you started feeling unwell. I believe I got my case by sharing meals with a customer who felt fine until after our bike tour was over. I, in turn, infected one of my compatriots at the firehouse before I showed symptoms and tested positive. Short of going back into extreme lockdown/isolation, I don’t know how to be 100% sure I’m not being exposed.

Best wishes none of you end up with long covid after the all clear.

Yeah, I'm not looking to assign blame to anyone for giving it to me... it is what it is... I just hope that I didn't infect anyone else, but in reality I probably did. Thankfully, being vaxed and boosted the symptoms are mild and the risks much lower than before vaccines... though I do have a friend who was vaxed and boosted and is battling much more severe flu-like symptoms than most cases that I hear about.

Sorry to hear - hope your wife gets through it quickly. Glad you are doing okay now.

The thought of being reinfected over and over ... ugh. But it's easy to see that likelihood is our collective new reality.

DH and I still live like hermits because we enjoy this kind of life. Still ... I was sick with a UTI a couple weeks ago and had a bad case of gastritis due to overuse of NSAID's last week and was reminded each time how much I hate being sick. I'd pay good money to never be sick with anything ever again.

My brother had strong symptoms but didn’t test Covid positive either rapid test or PCR for at least 5 days from start of symptoms, so I’m inclined to believe he wasn’t contagious before feeling symptoms. I have read many cases of vaccinated persons having early symptoms as the body is primed to quickly fight the infection. By the time my brother had a positive test he was feeling much much better, but was probably contagious.

I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you are both vaxxed.

So far I have avoided it, but my guess is I am living on borrowed time.

So I mask indoors but not out. Hot and humid, perspiration now.

In the previous thread there was talk about outdoor concerts or events.

I wonder about walking by people because the R0 of some variants are estimated to be as high as 10 or 13.

The other thing is, you can be walking briskly around several people on a warm summer day with minimal wind and you can smell and breathe in cigarette smoke.

Fact that the smoke hit your olfactory nerves means aerosols carrying the virus can also reach your nose and mouth in similar conditions. Hell I’ve smelled cigarette smoke coming from across the street with cars whizzing by.

Hopefully, in most of these situations, you don’t breathe in enough infectious aerosols — they still don’t know what the infectious dose or viral load is, if there is such a thing.

I hope she doesn't have too bad a case of it.

DH and DS (who lives with us) both tested positive today. DH's symptoms started last night. DS had some minor congestion starting a few days ago which he thought was nothing. Both are fully vaccinated and boosted. DH is double boosted (last was 4/1) and DS has had a single boost (he is in his 20s and only recently was eligible for a first booster).

Anyway, I tested and was negative and have no symptoms. But I will not be shocked if I come down with it even though we are now isolating as much as possible.

Best wishes to all who reported in with infections here. Being vaxxed makes a huge difference and I hope that works out for all of you.

Exactly the same as us. We thought DW had escaped, but obviously I infected her before I tested positive.

OTOH. I carpooled with two of my golf buds 4 days after my exposure (3 day before symptoms), almost an hour each way - and neither of them have come down with Covid, now 11 days later. Thank goodness.

Obviously we’re all carriers, exposing others, days before we know we’re positive…
