    Our First Year of Retirement!

This is indeed a great story and I like your attitude. I still have less than a year in retirement but really impressed with your details and how you handle it. I wish you to enjoy every day from now on!

Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

I did not negotiate anything. I even did not tell anyone at work about my plan to retire in Sep 2023. However I've been laid off just two weeks before I was preparing to give a notice. This was a nice surprise: in addition to vested RSUs, I received a severance package and collected unemployment...

    Moved into CCRC today

Actually it would be nice if those who are already living at CCRC or in waiting list, can share the name of CCRC and the reason why they choose that particular community rather than leaving everyone in the dark to rely on commercial ratings which can be biased. So far I learned where harlee is...

    First million is enough

Well, I live in HCOL area and I don't even go fishing. Just wondering around: hiking, biking. Do I qualify?

    First million is enough

Well, I don't*know about NYC but my annual expenses rarely exceeded $40K in SF Bay Area during career time (and by far the largest part is property tax which was reaching $14K last year). It did not include health insurance premiums. It is yet to see how expenses would round up for the first...

    First million is enough

Actually this would mean that you have ACA plan without a subsidy, due to hight income correct? If this is a case, then in fact you could retire with $1M and less medical expenses because of the lower income which qualify you for ACA subsidy.

Article: 'I'm too young to retire': What forced these workers to retire

I completely agree with statements made in this topic. Retirement plan in place by 50 would save you from troubles. My professional career went very well till I hit 50. At that age, I've been laid off the first time. But I have to admit they closed the entire organization: nothing to do with my...

Reducing stock exposure in Retirement, age 60+

Currently, I'm at 50% equities and I'm at the very beginning of retirement. This is as much reduction as I can take, to ensure fixed income can take me to major milestone (take SS) at 70 as planned. When I get closer to that goal, I plan to increase equities as the risk will be mitigated once I...

Considering a retirement move out of town/state

It depends where you are moving from. It is pretty common to move from expensive area into more affordable place before the retirement.

    Capital loss carryover in California?

Cathy, thank you so much for the info! Yes indeed it is asking for 2022 number. I did 2022 tax return with TurboTax and I did have CA capital losses to carryover reported for that year. By some reason, TurboTax did not take CA part correctly. I revisited this part and entered amount the same as...

    Capital loss carryover in California?

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding capital loss. Last year, I did an extensive capital loss harvesting with individual stocks I owned in taxable account at Fidelity. For federal tax report, the amount of capital loss has been imported into TurboTax from Fidelity correctly including the...

Who follows a "buckets strategy" in retirement?

I use at least two buckets which are allocated pretty much naturally: (1) after tax (2) pre-tax and tax-free. I'm 57 and live off dividends, interest and some part of principal from after tax money. All interest and dividend in IRAs are reinvested for the long term income. My plan is to draw...

I may have made the mistake of updating my Linkedin status to 'Retired'

I do have LinkedIn account and I did not update my status after retiring. I do not get any head hunter's attention so far. But if I eventually do I would not care about it. I keep LinkedIn just out of curiosity what is going on with my former coworkers.

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

This is great! But I wonder how it is possible to live on $13K annually unless you are outside of US.
