Are loans normally structured this way?

Maybe a basic question here, but I've never looked closely at this before. I'm doing my taxes, and I noticed that the amount of student loan interest I paid was still above the max deductible. I'm trying to figure out how much extra I need to pay on the principal to get the interest below the...

My employer's getting bought out...not sure what to do

I'm actually a hardware engineer, so I think there's more FUD now than with the IBM deal. Oracle professes that they're interested in developing the hardware side of the business, but I and others have our doubts. I see strong arguments either way--they'll keep the HW b/c they want to compete...

    Time to Start Hoarding Gold?

Not to sound like a jerk, but doesn't storing the emergency cash in the bank defeat the purpose of having emergency cash?

    Time to Start Hoarding Gold?

:laugh::laugh: Don't forget though, it depends on whether they're runners or shufflers. That changes the equation dramatically.

    DOW 1000 - A dire prediction

My initial response was to laugh, but then again, that was my initial response to that 'Dow 8000' thread we had a while back...

My employer's getting bought out...not sure what to do

I agree. That's the motivation behind updating my resume and getting in touch with contacts I haven't talked to for a while. It's interesting, I thought the stock price would've plummeted a lot lower than it has. Maybe there are still some investors who haven't given up on us. :-) Then...

My employer's getting bought out...not sure what to do

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I've had some time to think about it and process the feedback I've gotten (from here and from others I've talked to), and I realize I may have been jumping the gun a bit. While there's a lot up in the air, there's a chance the project I'm working on will...

My employer's getting bought out...not sure what to do

I work for a fairly large computer company that's in the process of being acquired by another company. I don't have any inside information, but it seems like all signs point to the acquisition going through out. I'm not sure what the best course of action is at this point. I really enjoy...

FDIC warns US bank deposit insurance fund could tank

FDIC warns US bank deposit insurance fund could tank ""Without these assessments, the deposit insurance fund could become insolvent this year," Bair wrote." I wonder if this is actually true, or just a way to force the banks to swallow the new fees. In either case, it seems like a very stupid...

Are 25-35 year olds feeling discouraged yet?

You also could have spent the last several years stealing cars and robbing banks and been better off for it. There was a risk you'd get caught and go to jail, but there was also the risk of the government not bailing you out had you spent more than you could afford on a house. I understand...

    Is the worst behind us?

I think I've seen articles hinting/guessing/hoping that the worst is over for the last 6 months to a year. I'd be really curious to see a study about how the information age has influenced economic cycles. Not just the professionals, but the general public is now subject to a constant barrage...

    New Year-New Challenges

Sorry to hear about that. Our company just had layoffs last week, and while I wasn't affected, the layoffs were rather large, and it's quite likely we'll have more in the near future. While I've never been laid off before, I've thought quite a bit about what I'd do, and I concur with REWahoo...

    Ridiculed for being cheap??

Great story. I'm surprised, however, that none of them learned from your example. I would think your early retirement would have opened their eyes to the benefits of frugality. Then again, the discipline required to carry it out would probably turn off most spendthrifts.
