    Alan Greenspan's book advance

Greenspan is a bright guy. His book might not be a fun read, but it will be filled with wisdom. I caught him on 60 minutes last Sun. and was impressed as always with his insight and thoughtful approach to the economy.

    $75/month food budget

You could live on peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal, pasta, and rice probably. Cheap carbs would probably be the way to go, but you might end up paying for it down the road since your health might suffer.

    Real Estate in your IRA

Residential isn't slated to recover until 2009 according to analysts after Moody's posted its last report on homebuilding. Just a consideration. In my opinion, there are still some deals in commercial, but they are few and far between in the states because of the high amount of capital out...

    Real Estate Sales

I know that homes are sitting on the market a lot longer these days with the current mortgage crisis affecting lending criteria. That said, if your house is in a constrained market, you should be able to sell it so long as you price it to move. Investing in upgrades can be a smart move, but...

    My East California Trip

Not sure if this is your style, but the Ahwahnee Hotel within the Yosemite gates is a must see. I had brunch there and it was great.

What will the next bubble be?

Here's a cool bubble that you may not have heard about: domaining. Let me explain. Generic internet domain names (i.e. seniors.com, creditcheck.com, bald.com, etc.) have sold for REALLY big money in the past year ($3 mil, $1.8 mil, and $400,000 respectively). I'm not sure if or when this...

I am new here... and almost ready for FIRE

Since you are trading down, you could probably count a portion of your home equity, but make sure that amount is conservative. Your travel expenses will likely increase when you move, since you will be in a different country than your children.

    Coffee: Nectar of the Gods??

2 large cups in the morning for me. Then I switch to diet coke by lunch. I know I should make the switch to green tea soon, but it's just too hard to pass up a cup of coffee in the morning.

    Another really remote place

Before we can install an ATM (ATM=’Automated Teller Machine’, i.e. a cash machine) we need to solve the problem of maintenance. An ATM needs regular maintenance from a qualified engineer. There could never be enough ATMs on St. Helena to justify having someone that qualified here full-time, so...

    Retire later, retire happier

I thought the article was informative, original or not.

Does anyone out there "work" in their retirement?

I always imagined retirement would be a great opportunity to finally open up a business or two that interests me without taking on a significant financial risk. Right now I dabble around with a few internet sites but would like to open up a home design store eventually. Is anyone out there...

    magnets

I heard of pressure point bracelets relieving motion sickness, so it doesn't surprise me that magnets are effective.

Are you frugal or a cheap b@$t@rd?

Re-gifting is rather tacky in my opinion, but it does depend on the situation and the original source of the gift.

    Natural to hate your job?

I think you have the right attitude about your job. In response to your comment about people in the forum disliking their jobs, keep in mind that this forum can have a bias to it at times. Generally, the people who dream about retiring are not necessarily 100% content with their current jobs...
