    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

I woke up this morning thinking, ok pretend you've hit the 1m mark… my immediate response was: a huge smile, radiant joy, and the thought that now I will focus more on my health. Well . . . . . I had purchased a foreclosed property last year for 19k which I am fixing up. Today I was reviewing...

Late start in semi-crisis. Better late than never?

Welcome, Buckeye! I joined not long ago in roughly the same position... Had just lost practically everything but my house to a messy divorce at age 33, and self-employed freelance, so volatile income. Knock out that credit card debt and you’ll have wings to fly. Oh yeah, definitely check out a...

    Running against a timeclock

Bird in hand...true. But, who knows if he won't have a better offer/package down the road? I think it's better to not make huge life decisions in a rushed state, often better to slow down and choose it when you're ready to, vs. when "it's" ready. Just my experience. It has got to work...

    Running against a timeclock

I won't repeat what everyone has said--if the numbers work, the numbers work! But. I would say, don't let the rush of the clock influence your decision. If you choose not to, you can always retire later.

    FIRE and Divorce

I am in a field of self-employment that was low-earning until my ship came in and I got a big client. The moment that ship sailed was also the moment we hit our FI goal at age 32—a huge feat for us—and was also the moment my wife struck. When the smoke cleared I was left with the house and 150k...

The richest person you have personally known

For those who have asked about the purpose of this thread, my original purpose was curiosity about how people have excelled financially to an extreme, especially if there are take-aways. In my case the ultra wealthy folks I've known seem to have made their fortunes in business and real estate...

The richest person you have personally known

I was thinking more learning how people became financially well off. For the people I've known, it seems like it has been running their own individual businesses. And real estate investing. Surprisingly, very few who have grown their wealth through stock investing, which is my chosen path. But...

    Dating While Pursuing FI

Another factor to keep in mind, coming from your peer who is navigating the same waters. A lot of women do have similar financial goals as you, in that they want to retire rich and early--It's just that they view you and your earnings as their ticket to get there. This seems to be the rule, and...

    Dating While Pursuing FI

My experience, that obsession never ends. It is hard wired. Use the time you'd spend on dating and either: spend time doing free activities to weed out the gold diggers, spend time by yourself doing what you want, or do like I've done and get a second job on evenings and weekends, and get in...

The richest person you have personally known

Who is the richest person you have known? How did they build their wealth? The first person who comes to mind is a peer of mine from my early twenties. I may have known wealthier people over the years, but considering his age I'd say he wins. He didn't flaunt his wealth but was obviously a...

Cost of living and Life Decisions

My choice was between the Chicago area and Kansas City. At the time, I wasn't making that much money. Like Athena53, I found a house twice the size in KC for half the price. Once my business took off, I heard stories like this article and was relieved I had made the right decision. Except it...

    Mortgage and my mind

I wonder at what rate it is better to pay it off. Quotes yesterday were 5.5%.

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

This is the week that put me at 30x my target expenses . . . IF I had been allowed to keep the fruit of my labor & my spouse had not run off with those zeros and commas! I hear she is redistributing it into a consumer ocean of restaurants and concerts. Starting a timer now to see how long it...
