What charities do people give to?

I really don't know more about the project then what I read. I don't think you will ever find much negative about Dan He was an older gray haired man and I was a small boy when I knew him. In the 1950's he and his wife had sponsored a DP family as we called them (Displaced Person) from Germany...

What charities do people give to?

Over the years most of our gifts of money have been to the Salvation Army. In general we try to have firsthand experience with the organization before we give to it. Not long ago the Seattle PI ran a piece on a particularly bad charity...

What charities do people give to?

Small world department. Our family farm was adjacent to Dan West's farm, who was the founder of the Heifer project. His wife was a grade school teacher in the local school. My wife and I have set up a donor directed charitable fund by transferring mutual fund shares to a charity. This will...

    Trinity University (San Antonio)

Ask them. Go to their web site and I'm sure you will find an email address you can use to contact them. If at all possible arrange to visit the campus and ask to meet a computer science professor. Quiz them about the strengths and weaknesses of their program. Ask them what their former students...

    Trinity University (San Antonio)

I didn't go to Trinity, but the daughter of a former colleague (chemistry professor) went there. She majored in Geology and recently finished her PhD in Geology at Arizona and as far as I know she was happy with the experience. It is a well regarded school. The question should be if the program...

    Like your job?

Loved my job. I was a mathematics professor. As another professor said, I teach for free, they pay me to grade papers. However, as I tell people, the only thing better than being a professor is being a retired professor.

    Do you mow?

We have five acres, but most of it is vegetable and flower gardens, pond, second growth fir and hemlock with a small grass yard for the dogs. I LOVE to mow the yard and work in the garden and my greenhouse. It was a great way to relax when I was working and it's one of the best parts of being...

    RIP John Backus

Took a course in FORTRAN on punched cards. Batch system with about 4 hour turnaround. I could get about three runs in a day. I taught FORTRAN where the students had to use punched cards and I got to use an ASR 33 Teletype! I disagree, though, that FORTRAN was as fast as Assembler. In another...

I was just a victim of CC fraud - anyone else?

Two stories. I got a call at work asking me if I had bought a used car with one of those cash advance credit card checks. The total was over $3,000.00. I assured her that I had never used one of those checks, and how did I know she was legit. I got her name, called the credit card company and...
