did you immediately start living a life of relaxation or did it take a while?

I'm right at six months now and not going to work seems "normal". But I can't tell you when it changed. The Sunday blues Khan mentions go away. Now it's hard for me to tell you what day of the week it is. As to the date... haven't got a clue.

What do you pay for a haircut?

I bought a set of clippers ($15) about 4-5 years ago and have done it myself since then. It was $11+$2 tip when I quit paying.

What are you not willing to scrimp on?

Hunh. I sort of felt my materialism was settling toward about zero. And after scanning through all the these posts.... nothing lit me up. I guess I'll scrimp on about anything. Except maybe my tip for good service.

Should you have to pay more for an unhealthy lifestyle?

I think if I'm paying for the health costs of my choices - I ought to be able to do anything I please. I also think it's ludicrous to expect someone else to pay my health costs - and that I should still be able to do anything I please. Looks like everyone wants freedom, but someone else...

    Cheap eye glasses?

There's places that collect old glasses. Might check Goodwill. Maybe they have a box of them you can go through till something sort of fits. That should meet the criteria of "... us early retirement people need to save as much money as possible."

    How old are you?

I've found that viewing my progressive age is better in five-year clumps. I was "about 50" for five years, then "about 55" for another five. This worked pretty good and avoid a lot of math required to be more precise. Now, I've turned 58 in October and I'm feeling that "about 60" will be...

Which Country Is Best For Me?

Just read through the advice to activist/dissidents..... wow. Better get the heavy duty foil.

Should I tell 'em what I think?

I tend to agree with Martha that there's no hard rule on this.... except that I tend to see the Fed as utterly hopeless. I worked in a Fed position for four years in the mid-80's and that's where I developed my 4-year solution to the problems I found there. 1st year: Eyes wide open...

    Hunting (but not for squirrels!)

I did a lot as a boy and young adult. Haven't been in decades though. Coming east from Arizona, I guess I never got used to all the land being private. I love to eat it though, when anyone feels like feeding me. :)

Flat panel HDTV is now a "necessity"

If the new TV quality is so good.... how come I can see the "oooo and ahhhhh" display pictures in their commercials on my current TV.... just fine?

If you're really retired, what are you saving your uniforms for?

"I have been out of the Navy for 21 years now, but I still occasionally have a dream where I am back on active duty and cannot find all of my uniform items." Same here, going on thirty years. I'm "there" again... somehow... but can't get to the clothing store or PX to get dressed out.

If you're really retired, what are you saving your uniforms for?

I sold my load to an ROTC senior a year after I got out. Blues, greens, fatigues, khakis... everything. Kept the dogtags and a few badges and some rank. That's been 30 years and I have not really missed it.

    Transmissions

I agree that is extremely unusual for a manual tranmission to fail as you describe. It's so much so that I would not discount the strong possibility that the problem might be in the clutch or throwout bearing (much cheaper to fix). If the dealer is diagnosing this over the phone it could be a...
