    Home Insurance Personal Property Values

I always wonder about this: Let's say the house burns down, and you lose all these personal possessions. How do you get reimbursed from the insurance company for this? Most people have no records of all the stuff they own -- but even if you did, the records would likely be in the house and...

Prevent Disinheritance of Heirs After Remarriage

My situation: Divorced 15 years ago with several kids. Remarried 5 years ago, she has 1 child. Roughly 70% of net worth is my pre-marriage property which I would want to go to my kids, 30% is post-marriage property. So we are setting up 3 trusts -- one "joint" trust to hold marital / joint...

    Feeling lost after FIRE

My advice is slightly different than the wise words of the many retired people here, who have successfully retired in their 50s and 60s. "Retiring" is for people in their 50s and 60s who have climbed the mountain, and now want to rest. If I were 31 and financially independent, I would...

    Feeling lost after FIRE

I will add to the overall good comments here. Most people retire in their 50s, 60s AFTER they have accomplished a mission. Having a mission is very important, especially for men. Your mission was to FIRE, which you accomplished. You are lost because you do not have a new mission. Humans need...

    Sell I Bonds....or not?

Wow that's ridiculous.... Can't you just redeem the bond and move funds to your already linked account, then give him the proceeds?

    What's your recent concert?

We saw Depeche Mode last weekend in Dallas. Great show! They've been going 40+ years, although only two remaining original members.

    Fixed Income Investing II

I also own SPLP-A. At $23.00, I estimate Yield to Maturity of about 10.2%, including both the coupon and the additional $2 of accretion. At $23.25 its about 9.6%. That's still a very juicy yield. At these prices, I'm holding till maturity.

    Sell I Bonds....or not?

While the 3.4% right now is low, I'm holding out at least a few more months to see what the next reset is. Based on the 4 months already in CPI, plus guesses for the next few, I am guessing the new reset will be 4.5%-5.0%. If that turns out to be true, I will likely just hold the I-bonds for...

    Estate Planning cost and landmines?

Thanks for the great comments.... have a fair amount of education to do on this subject.

    Estate Planning cost and landmines?

Looking to do an estate plan for myself and spouse, somewhat complicated due to blended family with adult children from each of us. Estate planning focused attorney is offering to do a full estate plan for $4000, including setting up a trust, powers of attorneys, health care powers of attorney...

    anybody else super conservative?

I'm 54, have had a good career and built up a decent net worth. FireCalc and NewRetirement say I can retire and be in good shape 99%. But....I am a very conservative investor. Portfolio is roughly 45% bonds (pretty short term, with almost half maturing over next year), 15% preferred stocks...

I've got Covid.... The thread for your covid experiences

I did the Paxlovid and got a very faint positive line as well, and then a negative test a few days later at day 11. Then, some symptoms came back and I tested positive again at Day 14.....then continued to be positive until day 25 and finally tested negative. This was about a week ago, last...

What to do with leftover 529 funds?

I'm planning to use the roll over to Roth option when its available in 2024, but there are a bunch of rules to be able to do that. The 529 account has to be open for 15 years. Also, if you have moved or rolled any over to a different beneficiary's 529, I believe it restarts the clock, so if...

I've got Covid.... The thread for your covid experiences

I am on day 19 of testing positive for COVID. Did 5 days of Paxlovid. Tested negative on day 11, but felt a little off and tested again on day 14, which was positive. Tested positive again day 17. Doc just gave me new prescriptions for 6 days of steriods (Medrol) and an antibiotic...

54 and planning ER in.....1,2,3 years?

Thanks. Yes I need to figure the spending part out. Currently probably $180k but have too many dependents on the payroll and all the expenses that go with that (example paying insurance on 7 cars with 6 drivers). Realistically we should be at $120k. Part of my multi-year plan is to track...
