Heading to Southeast Asia for ER in 2018 (hopefully)

Rodi, Since you had shortlisted Malaysia (Penang) and Thailand as the top 2 choices, you will definitely need a trip to see them for yourself. I have a few comments; 1. You are right about the food in Penang, they are great and cheap. You will need to watch the waist-line carefully when you...

51, ER in 11 months? Trying to escape golden handcuffs...

I remember those Sundays well! Now I love Sunday as I prefer the weekdays to weekends. A lot less people and often better offers for meals out.

    Early Retirement - New Normal

+1. All of the above (and with 3 young children). I benefited from several back-to-back expat postings which helped on the saving side.

27 year old dislikes working 40 hours a week

I think you are too young to have this negative view about work. I would suggest not nurturing this though too much. Try to find the silver lining when you can. You are almost certain to have long way to do, and by having a negative attitude towards work will make the journey much more...

At 51---no retirement plan but could retire in 4 years

Do we really appear to be so gullible? It is time to being in the PR man!

    My annual expenditure

The total spends for us (my wife and I plus 3 children) is about $105k. The 2 biggest items are holidays (we took a total of 10 trips this year) and prepayment for a new car. These 2 items account for 30% of the total.

    What's holding you back?

I was reminded of a huge benefit with retiring with young children. I was on-line doing my usual internet surfing when my youngest came into the room. He asked me what I was doing plus many other questions. We ended up rolling on the floor with me tickling him. He was laughing very hard. He...

    What's holding you back?

I retired 2 years ago, 2 of my 3 children are of pre-school age! Their young age was a concern but not enough to hold me back!

    Do I have enough?

I say go for it!.... only if you indeed have 1,000 million! If not, I agree with most that are saying you should probably work for several more years provided your job is not too toxic. You have time on your side which can be both a friend or enemy. I believe we are entering into a period of...

    Hello from a distance

I am in! I have finally handed in my letter! It did create a bit of fuss around the organisation which led to several meetings with very senior people in the megaorp. They made me an offer to stay on but I decided to reject it and stick to my RE plan. Although I have been planing for...

    Hello from a distance

Thanks for all your replies. Having worked the numbers so many times on my own, there was a lingering doubt that I had missed something. It is reassuring to know that I am good-to-go. Chris2008 – I have read all the postings that you mentioned. I do worry about not providing enough for my...
