I’ve done this and it worked fine at my previous employer. It just was made after all the mandatory withholding. But one thing to look out for is that sometimes an employer match is capped per pay period and doing large contributions can mean you miss out on some part of that match.
I think if you look at the home ownership rates you see a reasonably significant headwind in this recovery which given the overbuilding into the last recession and the tighter credit requirements meant the post recession recovery was pretty muted.

I don't think they limit your contribution but if for example you were paid $10,000 per pay period, allocated 50% to the 401k, the employer match which caps at 6% would be $600 and my employer at least does not catch up on the match. So after 5 pay periods I would hit the 24,500 limit and only...
One issue with doing a big amount all at once like that is that the employer match is in terms of some percentage of each paycheck (I think 3 or 6%) and doing that way you could lose some part of that match.
