    RIP Big Money Jim

I remember him well and also the wonderful wacky day of Jennifer. Sad to learn of his passing and I appreciate the notice. Far, far too young.

    Happy 20th Anniversary to Early-Retirement.org!

To Dory, REWahoo, and all the other characters who made this place so special for the past 20 years, I salute you. Many of my best days of the past 17 years have been spent perusing these boards. Much love to all, Sarah

Thanks Dad - Happy Father's Day

This was my first Father’s Day without my dad and it was very hard. I miss him a lot. He was also my first boss and taught me to answer the business phone on the first ring, which is a habit I’ve kept for 30+ years. For that and many other lessons, I’ll always be grateful to him.

    Emergency Preparedness

Wow that’s crazy—our county (ground zero for hurricanes) has to recruit folks for CERT classes and struggles to get them filled. Maybe they could suggest either a neighboring county or something equivalent offered by your state?

    Ultrasonic Cat Critter Repellent

Feral cat advocates suggest that the motion activated sprinklers are effective, and also the cat scat mats, which are plastic mats with soft spikes you can place in the areas they like to lay down or dig. The citrus spray is also a good idea. You can always try the ultrasonic one for a while if...

    Emergency Preparedness

A topic near and dear to my heart! We live in the country and have well water, so when the electricity goes out, so does the water. I keep a water drum ready to fill and a simple hand pump to draw water for flushing and dish washing. Thanks to being campers, we also have butane stoves and other...

    Our dog won’t eat

Yep, at 9, I wouldn't put him under unless it was an absolute emergency. Anxiety can be a big deal with rescues, as their fear of abandonment is very real. Good luck and I'm glad you are treating this conservatively for now.

    Naps, alarm or nap roulette?

There’s a long advocated plan that says to drink a cup of coffee and then settle in for a nap, as the caffeine will kick in to prevent the nap running too long and messing up your nighttime sleep pattern. Usually at about 15-20 minutes. And don’t get a Fitbit if you have terrible sleep. I have...

    Joe from Boston

Please visit the Lowcountry (what we call the lower coastal areas of SC) in the summer before you make up your mind. It is very hot and humid! Beaufort is a fairly sleepy town, but nice for those who enjoy getting out on the water. Not as much in the way of cultural offerings as Charleston or...

    Spotify for audio books

I have had a hit or miss experience on Spotify like you. Honestly, I gave up on it and now use the three apps my library offers to download audio books for my long commutes. There is a great selection and it’s free and painless.

    Our dog won’t eat

How old is your dog? Has he ever had periods of listless appetite in the past? My inclination is to hold off on surgery with an older dog (8+) for a bit, and agree that broth would be a good idea. How are his teeth? Good luck with this, I know you are worried, and I hope he gets back to...

    Audible and Prime

My local library subscribes to Hoopla, Libby, and RB Digital, and I have found the selection of audio books between these three to cover nearly all of my desired reading needs. Definitely recommend seeing what your local library offers. The selection on Prime Audio without the Audible...

    Has anyone retired in Belize?

Yes. I believe that the cultural disconnect there, over time, contributed to his death. It is a country I love and have visited many times, but his is a cautionary tale I’ve used to attempt to dissuade friends from settling permanently in other countries. Expat life can be fine for many folks...

    Has anyone retired in Belize?

A close friend retired to the Placencia area after falling in love with it on a trip with us there many years ago. I expressed my reservations about it at the time and often since then, but he was committed to the move. I enjoy visiting Belize, but the combination of corruption and foggy...
