Joining the ranks of the retired

Congratulations! I think your mid-coast Maine decision is the right one. I've been retired for three weeks now and have lived in mid coast Maine for over 37 years. In all that time I haven't found another place I'd rather be.

    Pre retirement jitters.

Currently in my second day of retirement, and have also felt worried and anxious about this new life event. I think this is normal for many folks. Already starting to feel good about finally being my own boss, and experiencing a level of freedom I haven't enjoyed since I was a child. Good luck!

    Two weeks before fire'd.

Well, the time has almost come. I'll be fire'd in two weeks after 37.5 years at the same company, just a week before I turn 60. I've spent years on this site reading and learning from so many great people. Thank you!! I'm hoping I can help others here over the years by sharing some of my...

Do women initiate divorce more than men?

I've always thought Einstein had a good point with this quote: “Women marry men hoping they will change. Men marry women hoping they will not. So each is inevitably disappointed.”

    What's your brush with fame?

Met James Taylor shopping in a store around midnight after one of his concerts back in '88. We talked for a little while, I got his autograph (he signed one of my w*rk pay stubs), and walked with him back to his tour bus. A real nice guy.

Poll:How long ago did you eat your last Twinkie?

Okay, I'm the odd one here. I ate four just last week. From time to time I'd bring one to work each day for a snack after lunch. I like them and will miss not having them around, but it's hardly earth shattering. We're lucky to live in a world of abundant food choices. Luckily there are plenty...

The Fiscal Cliff, In Three And A Half Graphics

Another disturbing change included in fiscal cliff discussions is the estate tax exclusion dropping from the current $5 million down to $1 million next year. If this is not changed, it could seriously affect the ability to pass along family farms and businesses to the next generation, although I...

    Destination: Maine

NW-Bound, those prices you've seen are correct. We've seen a large harvest of soft shelled lobsters this summer and wholesale prices at the dock are in the $2 a pound range. Local restaurants are currently serving lobster dinners for $9.95. As loyal Mainers, we're doing our part to help the...

2nd grade. It was the only time I'd ever seen my teacher cry. Living in Massachusetts it was especially hard. We were not that far from the Kennedy compound. The world was a different place for many of us after that.

    What d'ya think of KMP/CIM?

While Chimera is classified as a REIT, I believe it invests primarily in mortgage assets. I'd classify that as a bit high on my risk meter. The high yield is a good indicator of the amount of risk you take on when investing in CIM. KMP is a much more stable master limited partnership that has...

"Tax the Super Rich Now or Face a Revolution"

It seems the idea of a flat tax died with the Steve Forbes presidential hopes. It would certainly simplify the tax code, but I wonder how the public would accept it?
