US Gov't Employee Thrift Savings Plan Changes

That would make it a lot easier to balance the tilts in my portfolio! But alas, no TSP for me.

    Are we creating "weak men"?

I am hoping to leave a stealthy inheritance to my nieces and nephews. No inheritance is coming for me though. In the least optimal case, I expect to need to spend $500 thousand or $1 million to provide for my parents retirement.

    Real Estate Bubble?

I need to find a house and am seriously thinking about buying a run-down shack for $60k and putting up with it for a few years until prices get better. If they never get better, I'll just learn to live with it. This is not how I wanted my life to go, but my timing is so bad that I should've...

Honestly, how did we miss this?

I feel so stupid for missing this, especially since most people here saw it coming. And doubly stupid for not knowing whether I should get out now before or stick with what I've got.

Back after a 2 year hiatus and no chance of ER

To be honest, $2 million in the early 40s is pretty close to wealthy.

    I've avoided market timing but...

The US total market is up 27% since this post was made. I guess I should've stayed at 80/20.

    Importing income on Turbotax

I import it when possible but then always verify against the one they sent me.

    I am retired...from voting

I keep voting even though it feels more pointless every year. Never know if I'm making the right choice but I'll be dead in a few decades anyway.

What would you say to an 18 year old you?

I'd tell myself "Enjoy this time, it only gets worse from here."

Would you take guaranteed 6.5% returns for 30 years (pension buyout)

Good point, I didn't think about that. Pensions start at 65 and could help bridge the gap if I wanted to delay SS to 70.

Would you take guaranteed 6.5% returns for 30 years (pension buyout)

I think a federal sales tax, like the VAT, is more likely than a 50% federal income tax for the average person.

Would you take guaranteed 6.5% returns for 30 years (pension buyout)

Thanks a lot! I had assumed that I'd live until 85 when coming up with the numbers but hadn't quantified the returns for different lifespans. Also you're right, the pension is gone after I die whereas the IRA would still be around, so that is actually a lower effective return for the pension.

Would you take guaranteed 6.5% returns for 30 years (pension buyout)

6.5% was roughly the amount the $14k would need to compound at to get me to about $90k. Taking 1/20th of the $90k each year would get me $4500 a year for 20 years, assuming no return or inflation. But that is a quick and naive calculation as some have pointed out, and it's actually worth more...

Would you take guaranteed 6.5% returns for 30 years (pension buyout)

That low amount is why I'm thinking to just take the simpler route of rolling it into my IRA.
