    Great Importance of Stability

Just an observation ... as I look at these boards, and consider folks I have known over the years, the great importance of stability cannot be overestimated. Folks that are able to get careers in situations where they can stay employed for many, many years, and especially build government /...

Very Tough Choices ... Please Give Your Suggestions

Known the guy for 20 years +, and I am one of his few contacts on a regular basis. We speak almost daily now. Some of my data may be off, simply based on my recollections of conversations over the years and recent. Good point though ... I'm of course only getting his point of view. There's...

I'll Clarify a Few Things Lots of interesting input, thanks. They didn't live all that high on the hog, but someone hit it above ... the ex never contributed much to the marriage. She played at being a real estate agent, and usually lost money doing it. She had a college education, and later...

How secure are corporate jobs - really

Perhaps some large companies have enough bureaucracy to create more "security" ... but this is less and less common, in my experience. The sluggish, larger companies can't afford such luxuries as they compete in the market. Whether you call them layoffs or firings, it matters relatively...

Very Tough Choices ... Please Give Your Suggestions

Yes, he is seeing a counselor, and working on the depression ... should have mentioned that. As he and I go over the numbers, appears he and his girlfriend can make it on $58K with a paid off home, but certainly won't be living high on the hog. Any income he can bring in after that would be...

Very Tough Choices ... Please Give Your Suggestions

I don't post here often, but respect the intelligence and fairness of this forum ... let me post a friend's challenges here, and get your input. My perspective is blurred by our relationship. His situation is as follows: Executive, 56, who is really burned out. Used to make $200K+ annually...

    Tax Treatment of 401(k) Beneficiary

How is someone taxed if they inherit a 401(k) account as a beneficiary, following the death of the 401(k) participant? Note this would be a non-spouse, significant other beneciary. Any planning suggestions? [I'll also be consulting a tax CPA / attorney, but was curious about knowledge here.]...

Vanguard Lifetime Income Program - Single Premium

Thank you, Mark500 ... you see the dilemma. We need something as autopilot as possible, that she would have a more difficult time hocking, or getting into a position where someone takes advantage of her. We considered the irrevocable trust, and it is in the running. Question is, will that...

Vanguard Lifetime Income Program - Single Premium

A friend has a relative who can be a bit of a spendthrift, and is not good at managing money. He wants her to be secure, and have a lifetime stream of income, inflation adjusted, so that she will always have a base amount of money to live on. [He may pay off her mortgage as well, but that...

    Who has/will have annuity?

Vanguard I've recently considered buying a Vanguard life annuity, with inflation protection, for a relative who may need steady income with no worries about managing the funds ... rate was 4.45% in the last week, for a female age 50. Considering it.

Iran the british navy and what should be done.

lets-retire ... if you're reading my comment correctly, you're saying you expect it will take decades before we reach that major conflict? I doubt it ... if you mean we'll be in conflict for decades, that I can believe.

Iran the british navy and what should be done.

I agree with you 100%, Insanity / Peter. Laurence, glad to see you have your hackles up on this one as well. We're not screwed. The U.S. is a great nation, with great economic, military and cultural strength. We do need some changes in policy, and an energy policy should be one of the highest...

Charge new car to credit card ???

Well, perhaps someone at a dealership said this was a limitation set by a credit card company, but I've never heard of such a thing. Another, arcane factor here is that there is a dealership agreement between the retail finance company and the dealer ... that agreement indicates the dealer...

Charge new car to credit card ???

Dealers don't make enough money on most new cars to be able to afford to take that hit for credit card fees. They'd be giving away significant gross. I don't know any dealers that would allow this ... now, the down payment ... that's a different story usually.

    Anyone see the movie "300"

A good movie (on Yahoo, B+), and a somewhat fictionalized account of a great historic event, which may have had a wonderful impact on the birth of our own civilization. An account of great leaders and courageous men. The History Channel did an excellent piece on the facts behind the battle...

Now answer this article.. Why is he still alive?

That is an interesting perspective, with which I'll respectfully disagree ... I see the reverse as true, and has been for many, many years. I'll bet Bush doesn't view the media as so Republican ... Frankly, research supports the fact that journalists as a group lean left as they vote...
