experience with IRS free file options

Same here. I was a long tiem TaxAct user but prices starting increasing a lot every year so I switched to TaxHawk a few years ago. It does everything i need, just as well as TaxAct did.

    AI and the future

I spend more time watching over my robo vacuum than if I just vacuumed the floor myself. (It's constantly getting stuck somewhere). So in the future, maybe humans will be relegated to fixing all the problems that AI robots cause.

    Home Assistant advice

I never heard of Home Assistant until I saw this thread. I looked at the website but am not really sure what one would use it for. Can you comment briefly on this, without derailing the thread too much?

What new series are you watching? *No Spoilers, Please*

I tried watching "Copenhagen Cowboy" on Netflix, at a friend's recommendation. I found it unwatchable! I rarely give up on a decent series but I just couldn't stand this one. I'm wondering if anyone here liked it.

    2024 Tax Software

I switched from TaxAct to TaxHawk a couple of years ago and it works great. In addition to the the normal tax stuff, I do a Schedule C for small business income (my retirement hobby).

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

With my last car, I really had to floor it to accelerate, like when merging onto a highway. When I got my Tesla, flooring it was a hard habit to break and I often found myself speeding before I realized it. You can set the car to sound a chime when you go more than x mph over the posted speed...

What new series are you watching? *No Spoilers, Please*

I'm enjoying "A Discovery of Witches" on Netflix - modern day witch / vampire stuff.

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

I've seen it limit the auto-pilot speed to something below the speed limit in heavy rain.

    Cloud based backup recommendation needed.

I'm happy with Dropbox for cloud-based backup of select folders that I care about - photos, documents, etc, etc.

    Tallow or lard?

One thing you can do is save the bacon fat when you cook bacon. I really like it for sauteing certain vegetables in. It keeps a long time in the fridge.

For yearly physical what tests do you guys get done?

64 years old - height, weight, blood pressure, standard blood work including PSA. No digital prostate exam, doc just asks if I have to get up to pee a lot at night, I don't, and that seems good enough for the doctor.

Do you ask chatgpt questions? If so what kind?

I write press releases for an organization that I volunteer for. I use ChatGpt to help write those. First, I'll write something myself, then I'll feed it into ChatGpt and ask it to revise what I've written. It's really great at grammar, so it sometimes, sometimes comes up with a better way...

    getting accustomed to (relative) wealth

I can certainly afford to spend a lot more, but it's still a question of whether it's worth the expense. I might spend more on a hotel room if I was going to spend a lot of time there. Spending $200 on a bottle of scotch or wine? I doubt if I ever would because I'm pretty sure I would not be...

Will this be the last DST change?

I like the idea of doing away with time zones worldwide so that everyone is on "universal time". If you set up a Zoom meeting for 14:00, it's the same time no matter where you are in the world. https://www.wired.com/story/universal-time-zones/

    Instant Pot Cooking?

I did something like that recently too. I made white rice as per Instant Pot instructions, but I also put some frozen chicken tenders on top of the rice to cook at the same time. Even though the cooking times were different for rice and chicken, it came out perfect. I think I set the time...

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

Thank you! At times this all seems very complicated, sometimes I think I'm over-complicating things. I appreciate the advice.

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

Thanks, gauss, I hadn't thought about attacking this from the other end. All of my savings are at Vanguard, so I'll try working with them on this. Thank you!

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

Thanks, I'll have to research how some of this stuff get listed on a 1040 or 1041. Besides this $5k IRA, there might be another few thousand $ odds and ends going into the estate account until it's all distributed. The biggest item in this estate is the sale of the house for about $275k, but...

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

Yes, I'm hoping that the larger $40k IRA can get rolled over into 2 $20k IRAs. Getting help from this particular bank is very frustrating, but I'll keep after them. We have a buyer for the house and expect closing in early December, about 3 months after my mother's passing. We're doing a...

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

I've never been an executor before and I'm still a bit overwhelmed with everything regarding my mother's recent passing. Maybe by April I'll have changed my mind about using a CPA for her taxes, but right now I'm pretty fuzzy on a lot of details, particularly about what taxes apply to an...

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

I found a statement showing that an RMD was taken in April of this year. The will makes no mention of taxes. That's what I'm thinking. Everything in the estate is split 50/50 with my brother and myself, both retired, and I do try to limit my income for ACA purposes. The custodian is a Life...

    confused about inherited tax-deferred annuity

My mother passed away recently and I'm sorting through her finances. My father passed away years ago. I discovered that she had a small tax-deferred annuity with a life insurance company worth about $5k. It listed my father as beneficiary with no secondaries, so my mother's estate receives...
