Seeking West Maui Opinions for Vacation

If you’re just there to stay at your resort, hit the beach and play golf, no issue. If you want to experience more than the resort golf experience, I’d agree renting a car is a must, and for golf, take a drive to Waiehu Muni. It’s the Pebble Beach of Maui. In awful shape and Almost shut down...

    One year to live.

Shoot. Didn’t mean for MY condition to hijack the thread. While I appreciate all the thoughts about my condition, I should have waited or not mentioned it, as I think this is an interesting topic on its own, while of particular interest to me. But, Thanks for all your thoughts and comments...

    One year to live.

Mariel, Very interesting you ask. I value the input of the contributors here. I’ve been putting together my own thoughts/list, want to get ideas on what I might be leaving out. Oh, and, yeah, just received diagnosis of GBM, glioblastoma multiforme, a month ago, so I got that goin’ for me.

If you knew you only had one year to live, what would you do? Assume that your health will be ok, but go down rapidly at the end of the year.

    Montana road trip

Virginia City is kind of cool/kitschy. Butte has an interesting history and architecture. It was about the richest city in USA around 1900. And you can visit the Berkeley Pit and the headwaters of the Clark Fork River, the nations largest Superfund Site, and witness what environmental...

    2024 Investment Performance Thread

I still don’t understand how a one year cumulative return is different from a one year return (assuming no additions or withdrawals). I think they just made a mistake in Figure 2, using the 10.6% for 3 year 60/40, and putting it erroneously in the one year.

Yes, it was. Yet they say it was 14%. Guess I don’t understand the difference between a one year cumulative return and a one year return.

    Successful people without any education

Street, You probably only one who might know where this is - my wife’s uncle, who spoke with a lisp and looked like Junior Sample of Hee Haw, dropped out of school in 8th grade to work on the family ranch in Alzada, Mt. He was into all sorts of businesses, from tobacco and horse farms in the...

Do I need to pre approve with Medicare a dermatology visit and Basal cell cancer removal?

Medicare Advantage. PPO. I had been raving about how great their coverage had been. I’d racked up $120k billing by the providers. I had been able to go where I wanted (MDAnderson). They had accepted $40k from UHC as payment in full with my share being only $600. My doc assures me this is...

Do I need to pre approve with Medicare a dermatology visit and Basal cell cancer removal?

Yesterday, two hours before my craniotomy, I get notice UHC insurance is still”pending”, I’m now self pay, and the estimated cost is $157k. I guess they figure it will help reduce the stress from having your skull cracked open. lol. Surgery went well but won’t know results/treatment plan for a...

    leaving market

Depends what you mean by safe. If you mean, no loss in nominal value, tbills, CDs, mmf, savings account, coffee can of cash buried in backyard all work. If you mean maintain your current purchasing power/standard of living, doing any of the above would not be totally “safe”, as inflation will...

With markets higher than any time in history

I remember this from almost 40 years ago. Legendary international mutual fund manager John Templeton, while almost always expressing optimism, said it’s NORMAL for stocks to decline 50% at any time. You’ll never know when, but that risk is why returns in equities are higher than “safe”...

My first RMD will be in 2025. Lump sum withdrawal on 1/2/2025 or 12/31/2025?

I’ve always thought of the IRS as a charity, so I’ll do the same and claim distribution as a Qualified Charitable Distribution. lol. No, sorry, that’s a joke. Probably ill advised as there’s enough legitimate confusion about RMDs and QCDs. Although if you read the thread you’ll see very good...

I invested in some mutual funds for my daughter many years ago in a UTMA. She’s now of age and filing her own tax return. She has minimal income this year, so I was thinking of having her realize some of the gains on those tax inefficient, higher expense funds. Choices considered for...
