    How Should She Invest?

She's not paying towards household expense. We really don't need her because she's very responsible with her money. Other than food and toiletries, she pays for everything else (entertainment, clothes, gifts, etc.). I think I'll have her keep maybe equivalent to 3 months' rent as her...

    How Should She Invest?

I just looked through some of my old questions, including how to teach children about money, which never got answered ;D and in a blink of an eye, my baby is now 24! Through living at home and mostly because she's been homebound during COVID, she just told me that she saved $40K! That's on top...

Paid My House Off - No One Else to Tell

Congratulations! We paid off ours early... and yes, after it happened I also wanted to shout from the rooftop... but didn't of course ;D I mean now that I'm 55, people might assume, and I'm okay w/telling people if asked but don't volunteer it.

    Travel budgets?

Same thoughts! Similar. We tell our daughter that we expect her to earn her keep and always talk about leaving her our "two cents." When we're gone, she'll have 2 houses in the Bay Area. Whatever on top of that will be gravy (we're pretty cheap, so unless LTC eats all of it, there will be...

Anything to Do during My Last Year of Earnings?

Thank you all... I will check out the link and review your comments... that was way more than I was expecting. We've hardly lived on a budget because we normally spend within our means. Our financial planner projected our retirement use at about 6% because he didn't believe we'd only spend...

Anything to Do during My Last Year of Earnings?

I'm probably overthinking this, but I'll just put it out there. If all goes right, I will retire 10/1/2021, and husband will retire approx. 11/1/2022. According to financial planner, retirement calculator, etc., we will have enough money to retire and outlive our money and leave something for...

Pay off mortgage? (yes this old question)

We paid off our mortgage in 2013 and have never had any regrets. Also one less thing to think about how to invest the money otherwise;D We still have a mortgage on the rental, where the rent covers that and other expenses.

30 , married with two children in South Louisiana

I think you're a great example of someone/both of you of having goals and working towards them. So many others would have thought they won the lottery with the jobs and spent so much keeping up with the Jones' (do we still say that?) and be nowhere near you.

    Class of 2021

Thank you! We have quarterly reviews, so there will be a bunch still, but yes, 1 big one (2/2021) and 5 small ones left. They aren't cutting staff (didn't do it even when things were bad, and I feel like folks would be shocked and it would look bad if I were laid off as the most senior (years...

    Class of 2021

Joining the club... my date is 10/1/2021. 585 more days according to my countdown timer. After I deduct the vacation days, holidays, weekends, that's about 232 work days left. A week ago, I found myself as that person who suddenly received a low rating after many years of contribution to...

Mid 50's or younger... are you counting on Social Security?

I'm 53 and optimistic that it'll still be around. i know it's against all the rules, but I'm planning to take it at 62. My mom received her 1 and only check when she turned 62... and passed away. Sadly, I'm not 100% sure that I'm healthier that she was (something I'm working on changing).

How do you deal with a wife with no FIRE plans?

All I can say is that I used to hear my dad complain about how my mom would send money "home" to her brother, but her brother (my uncle) was raising his family with not that much money (only my aunt worked and they had 4 young children); he was disabled. I'd hear my mom reply that her brother...

Top 15 vehicles owned for 15+ years

My first car was a 1984 Ford Tempo...:banghead: Went back to the dealer numerous times (I was only 17 and had to take public transportation in a different county to make it back to high school from the dealership >:() My next car was a 1987 Acura Integra, which I drove until my husband thought...

    Unusual (I suppose) Question

Can't wait to hear the ending! I am still looking for two people who helped me when I was just a high school student working on an army base. I know they pulled strings for me to stay after the summer and other stuff, but I was way too young to realize it. Both are most likely in their late...

Do You Enjoy Reading More, Same, or Less Than When Younger?

I need to remember this. I've rarely not finished a book because i feel obligated to get through it. ;D I've had to stop reading Patricia Cornwell because of the violence (not sure if it's because of a particular book though), but one i really like is Sara Paretsky. I've also noticed that...

    51 and Not Retired Yet...

Thank you all SO much for your support:) This is helpful in keeping me sane. I got counseling in mid-2019 when I thought I was going to have a mental breakdown. She gave me a couple of things to think about when I'm stressed, which has helped. Makes me crazy that the reason for counseling...

Regular Exercise, How do you do it.

Oh boy. I'm not retired yet, but I totally can see myself writing this in about 20 months ;D Other than the standard "I hate my job," the other reason I'm looking forward to retirement is to be able to sleep in. My plan is to wake up, have my first meal, mostly likely lunch, and then go to...

    Volunteering seems like work

Also it's just sometimes difficult to be a volunteer. I remember trying to find organizations to bring my daughter to, and a lot of times they don't have their act together. We'd show up and nothing to do or the contact isn't there. That's not a good way to show how "great" volunteering is to...

Preparing for the approaching retirement date?

Our company requires a 3 month notice to process retirements, but it's handled by a 3rd party vendor, and they don't tell management. I'm wondering if they can still lay me off where I'd lose my retirement benefits though if i give them more than 2 weeks notice and it's before my retirement...

    51 and Not Retired Yet...

I've thought of this post from time to time and can't believe it's been almost 2 years. My countdown calendar says 601 day  It's been a roller coaster in the past 2 years. Early last year, we didn't get our bonuses, so that was a lost of maybe $13K-$15K. 2019 was the busiest year for...

    High cost of Weddings

Wow! That's crazy. My rehearsal was at my favorite Chinese restaurant at the time attended by the parents, the bridesmaids/groomsmen and maybe a couple of others... probably cost less than $100... okay that was 27 years ago, but still;D Good luck. Congratulations! Sorry... lots of different...

    51 and Not Retired Yet...

Following the thought of, "My, how things change!" I'm sharing an update... it's been almost 2 months since my original post and: - my manager quit - I have a new manager - With this move, I have a different client group - I am trying hard not to work extra hours, and the sky hasn't fallen - In...

What does "enough" mean to you?

I'm not retired yet, but for me, it won't be a number... I think the number originally was $3 million in non-real estate monies, but I won't get there before I retire. I already know when I'm retiring because it'll be based on our company's retirement benefits... it's when I qualify for retiree...
