Age 65/$3.3M IRA - Deflate it before RMDs?

This jogged my memory. I recall when I was ERing ten years ago that the conventional wisdom claimed it was a bad idea (from a notional and mathematical point of view) to pay the taxes on a Roth conversion with money from inside my tIRA. The thing is, I basically *have* no money outside my IRAs...

Age 65/$3.3M IRA - Deflate it before RMDs?

My wife works part time and I do withdraw ~10-20k a year as needed for home improvement etc. The $100k is strictly pensions/SS/trust. I don't work; is the Roth conversion sketchy like a backdoor Roth? Can I easily do it without a lawyer/financial advisor?

Age 65/$3.3M IRA - Deflate it before RMDs?

I'm 65 and almost all my liquid assets - $3.3M - are behind an IRA. I understand that not paying taxes on it eliminates the tax drag on compounding interest, but I'm getting scared about RMDs in six/seven years. I'm guesstimating (in today's dollars) that at 72 the Feds will assume I'll have...

Is 80% of income really the right goal in retirement? Explain

You kind of need to generate or have available the amount of money that you spend each year. If your capital nets you more than that, all the better.

When will the clouds part and angels sing again?

About five years before I retired someone showed me the company's online pension calculator. Two million dollars? This can't be right. Yup, two million dollars. I had an additional paltry $600k in my 401k. That's when I decided to retire at 55.

    Wrestling with bond allocation... again!

I withdrew everything to cash about two months ago. Two days ago I put 33% back into Total market stock. I'm keeping the balance in cash cause I'm ascared of bond funds. Can I buy individual bonds in my IRA?

    Timing the market and elections

OK so Mr Greed was tapping on Mr Fear's shoulder so today I got back in 33% into the Total Stock Market funds of my Fidelity & Vanguard IRAs. Prefer cash to bond funds for the balance/ballast ATM.

    Timing the market and elections

Shucks I didn't get the knife-edge re-entry point I was hoping for today. Imma stay out for another couple days and hope there's not a big run-up. Sorry folks but I need a cataclysm! j/k I'll do fine.

    Timing the market and elections

Lately the market tanks after an 8-year term. 2000, 2008, 2016? I did a very un-Bogleheaded thing (again) and parked my $3M in cash about three weeks ago. I already made $200k this year so I took the luxury of heading to safety. Stupid yes but I dodged a $20K loss so far. When will I re-enter...

Just from the point of view of clarity, I wonder if at some point they'll memory-hole the moniker "Affordable Care Act".

    Year to year spending variation

We were at a steady ~100k/year for about five years (We live in SoCal with two large teen boys). This year we spent an extra ~70K on two cars and a lawn and a Japan trip and an Alaska trip. Perhaps not coincidentally I just turned 59 and a half. Taxes should be interesting next April. I...

    Pension Plan Lump Sum Payout

In 2011 at 55 I took the "lump sum" payout (actually 60 months payout) of $2.1M instead of a COLAed $60k/year pension. Put it in IRAs along with 401k dough. Sequence of returns is an huge factor in how this plays out, and I was fortunate. I've make $600K on my port since retirement. My wife...

    Indicators of Wealth?

I'm 60, retired 5 years. I have an enormous lawn that's been turned to crabgrass years ago. I have nothing but time and am in good health, but whenever I try to tackle say 50 square feet I realize all the brutal labor involved and poop out. Screw it. I took the first bid I got (stupid I know...

Help me plan a North American road trip

Your timeframe is a non-starter, but we're taking an RV next August from LA to the vicinity of Salem Oregon to see the total eclipse. I believe I heard that it's the only full solar eclipse in the US for the next 40 years. It's going to cross the country from coast to coast.

Is this ok? Boss asked me complete a performance evaluation of her

When I was you-know-whatting everybody reviewed everybody and it was all a joke. Each year everybody had to scratch up at least three people - peer, subordinate, superior - who would bother to vomit up a few glowing paragraphs. Just so there was plenty of feedback. Then they'd throw out the...

    Help -- insomnia

Not for nothing but I had chronic insomnia for my first 55 years - my mind was always overactive, pursuing tangents when I was trying to sleep. During a family illness five years ago my doctor prescribed me a small regimen of Xanax (alprazolam) to chill me out. I said I had insomnia too and he...
