    Class of 2015

Yup, I've been pleasantly surprised at how successful and easy the transition has been. I spent a couple of years looking over the financial situation and trying to prove to myself I couldn't afford to do it. Pulled the trigger and left work May of 2015. All in all, it's been great.

irishgal, As far as work, for the last couple of weeks there was some distancing, but actually the closer we got to the end, I think they realized how dependent they were on me. So today, there were lots of hugs and compliments from people that surprised me. No regrets so far.

Done! Work life ended at 2:00 PM today. Doesn't even feel odd at this point. Certainly went better than I thought.

How do pets figure in your retirement planning?

We have two GSD's in IPO (used to be Schutzhund training), they are my hobby. Training and trialing for titles. So, expenses are a little high. We will be fully retired in July, and yes they do restrict travel a bit. Most likely I will have one as long as I live, I can't see a time I will not...

Looks like April 30 is the new last day at work. Signed up for new health plan through my DW's work (school teacher) starting May 1, she retires July 16, with health and dental for life. My health will be about $1200 a year less than COBRA or ACA.

    In-Drive auto insurance device

I've been using the In-Drive device for 9 months now. No issues. It measures, mileage, braking, acceleration, [B]turn signal usage[B], but not certain about g-force (swerving/cornering). I beginning to think they weight scoring heavily on turn signal usage. Last 6 month renewal was reduced...

    Class of 2015

Turns out I had 43 days of vacation and comp. Notified management that unless I take some extra time than planned between now and then, my actual last day of work will be May 5. As of tomorrow only 56 workdays.

Dash Camera - does anybody use one?

I have both a GoPro and a dash cam. After using the GoPro for a while I ended up purchasing the dash cam, both easier to deal with and cheaper in the long run. The dash cam can be set to record in 5 minute segments with the oldest being erased when the card is full. This one also can be used...

    Class of 2015

Originally planned for June 30 this year, with 41 vacation and comp days, I only have around 70 work days left.

    Timing the first SS deposit.

I know to file three months in advance, but still a little confused, here's the situation: My DW and I are both retiring effective June 30 this year. Our last pay checks will be issued in June. SS checks are issued a month in arrears? So in order to avoid a check-less month we file in April...

    Class of 2015

For me, July 1, 2015 is on track. The company has hired a vendor to replace me regarding the monitoring and maintenance of the company network. They will begin replacing servers and setting their monitoring capabilities next week. The full transition should be complete by the end of the year...

    Ooma whole house connection

On my second month with Ooma over cable and wireless to the router. We have 5 Panasonic cordless phones, great system. So far, only very minor voice quality issues as pointed out by Tree-dweller. Loved the blacklisting capability so much I sprung for the premier service when they offered a...

    Share a Hobby?

@Sarah - Thanks, the fun is in developing the partnership with the dogs. @Mr._Graybeard - Isn't it fun to see the dogs progress. I love each new step when all of a sudden you can see "the lighbulb come on". Congrats on that handful of ribbons.

    Share a Hobby?

Not retired 'til next July (sooner depending on the employer and next project) but I do have hobbies that I have just never found enough time to truly enjoy. Kayaking, fishing, SUP, metal detecting (I live on the Outer Banks of NC) but it seems that the best day for any of those happen to be...

    When you are 75...

Thanks for the post, this reinforces my plans for ER next July (if you can consider 63 as ER). I won't, but I aught to copy and forward your post to my FA who wants me to work to 70.

    Class of 2015

Management had difficulty making some decisions today. To help move them along, I declared my intent to retire as of July 1, 2015. Hope that wasn't a mistake. But I did get the desired result. Now they're ready to move on some items they've been putting off.

    Taxes after FIREd

Thanks for all the responses, this is fortifying my resolve to stay on this course. I've initiated a process at work that will allow me to bow out gracefully and leave everyone in a good situation, but it most likely will become an irreversible process in the next couple of months. So, I've...

    Taxes after FIREd

I'm trying to get a handle on tax liability after retirement. Using both the Intuit and H&R Block tax estimators I come up with what looks like ridiculously low looking taxes. How accurate are they? Approximately 79k income of which 43,250 is SS produces a total Fed and State tax of around...

    How did you quit smoking?

I quit cold turkey the day my first grand child was born 10 years ago. I couldn't fathom exhaling that old ashtray breath on that spankin' new baby. Before that I had smoked for 30+ years.

July 1, 2015 looks like the day.

It's the financial adviser at the bank which happens to manage my IRA and 401k. I don't think it's so much a desire to make money off me as it is the standard advice that is accepted as "the thing". There's been plenty of opportunity to sell me on annuities, insurance, etc. I think he...
