    Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Well done Frayne! I played that course years ago; it's not easy. (Parents used to live in Chattanooga so, I've played a couple courses there.) Shooting my age or lower is also a goal of mine. I'm 68 and, while I'm getting closer, it looks like I'll have to live a few years longer. ;)

Yep. Bear's best is not "bad"; it's just not remarkable. Although, the mega-mansions around it (well set back) are mesmerizing! But, the same can be said of Rio Secco, which is a better course. I travel to LV once a year to play with my buddies and we go to St George most of the time...

    Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Very cool! I play regularly with a 78 yo who’s shot his age or less four times. The last time was about 6 wks ago when I was playing in his group. I knew he was playing pretty well that day but, really no idea of his score. He made a curling 8 ft putt on 18 for par, then got this wonderful...

    Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Met some buddies in Vegas for a golf trip, followed by two days of golf with my bride. Most LV courses aerate in late summer/early fall so, one course was a bit shaggy the first day. But, overall a great trip. Played Rio Secco (4.5), Bear’s Best (4.0), Paiute Wolf (5.0), Reflection Bay (4.5) &...

    umbrella policy question

Seems to me that the most relevant data for deciding how much liability coverage to have is based on what actual damages are paid in personal injury lawsuits. BTW, 95% of suits are settled. Here’s a good relevant article from Forbes, with key data excerpted and link to article below. “Some...

If he can’t even get the grammar right, much less all the facts, he has little credibility with me.

    Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Went to Glade Springs golf resort (WV) last week with three golf buddies. It’s wonderful mountain golf; lots of trees, very lush. Although, one gets into the **** quickly on such courses. We played Cobb, Stonehaven & Woodhaven. It is a great time of year to play there and very affordable...

Midpack- Very nice! I've almost bought Mizuno irons a couple times so, I'd like to hear what you think of them. BTW, I'm impressed you still hit a 4 "iron" instead of a hybrid.

Isn't dementia a qualifying condition to collect LTCI? For example, it qualifies an insured to collect LTCI in California. "An 'impairment of cognitive ability' means you need 'substantial supervision due to severe cognitive impairment'."

Deceased sister's home sold - thoughts on what to do with proceeds?

I expect you've quantified the cost the "peace of mind" you'll get from selling the rentals. And, in the end, your personal evaluation of that is the one that counts. However, it sounds like it could be substantial (you've owned them long enough for value to triple [Cap Gains] plus, you'll pay...

Why do you think so? Correct balance of not being too young but, also still qualifying? I think the average CCRC entry age is 81.

Thx for the update Harley! The quote above ought to get the attention of those considering CCRCs.

How to fight jetlag for a 2 week trip to France?

Correct but, there’s both time difference & time in the air. Time in the air from west coast US (where we both reside) is approximately the same for Paris or BA. The plan you describe is very similar to our plan for a trip to Amsterdam, which I mentioned up thread. Hope it works as well for you...

How to fight jetlag for a 2 week trip to France?

I don't think one can generalize, as the plan for exposure to light, getting sleep, and use of caffeine & melatonin is dictated by the departure & arrival time zones plus your flights. To give you an example though, I've loaded in our upcoming 10 Jan 2024 return flight from Buenos Aires to SFO...

How to fight jetlag for a 2 week trip to France?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the "Timeshifter" app. DW & I used it on our last trip (SFO-AMS & PRG-SFO), and it worked great. It's based on the travel schedule you input, and sets a plan for minimizing jet lag. Basics of the plan are to manage exposure to light & caffeine, sleep and (if...

Seeking Advice to Help Recently Widowed BIL

BIL UPDATE #3 Well, it took about a year to sort things out but, my BIL is now in a good place regarding finances, health care and trusted professional advice. He also seems to be doing better personally and psychologically, which makes me happy. I was able to spend some time with him last...

Absolutely agree with these sentiments. At the risk of sounding a bit harsh, I think many people resort to 'lazy' or worse ('magical') thinking when it comes to this subject, as alluded to by Aerides. I know this from personal experience in my own family. Below are some stats on how "family...

Harllee- Would like to see some pics if you have them. Also, would you be willing to share the name of the CCRC? It would be helpful knowing the company to research more on what seems to be a good situation.

With that level of guaranteed income plus a "sizable investment and retirement portfolio", and given the oft cited rule of thumb regarding LTCI (buy it if your net worth is btwn $200k-$2M), why did you even buy LTCI? Simply for endowment purposes?

Alex- Try reviewing this post from the E-R.org stickies/FAQs. It applies to CCRCs in general but, has a NorCal orientation, which should be even more applicable to you. It is a good starting point. Best! https://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f47/ccrc-reference-material-faqs-86124.html

It seems we agree on this part of my post: "Discussions about CCRCs, LTCI, etc are really discussions about how to manage the last phase of our lives; specifically, how we guard against asset depletion..." No distortion intended; it's simply my view on how to address the basic issue. I...

Just a few comments (IMHO) on posts above: - Discussions about CCRCs, LTCI, etc are really discussions about how to manage the last phase of our lives; specifically, how we guard against asset depletion and ending up in a sad, terrible Medicaid facility or worse. - Almost everyone wants to...

    Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Don't know. I've heard that a stay is required to get a tee time so, that makes the trip cost 4-figures. We played Spyglass & Spanish Bay (also "Pebble Beach Links" courses managed by the same company) for $225 & $175 per golfer. It was fun but, both courses can be punishing.

LPGA US Women's Open @ Pebble Beach DW & I were able to drive down to Carmel for a little golf, both playing and watching. As an NCGA member, we often get great offers to play high end courses in Cali. I played with three buddies @ Spyglass & Spanish Bay, and DW played @ Pacific Grove...
