    Compare retirement planners & simulators

I began putting together a spreadsheet to compare the features of different common retirement planners and simulators. It's in its early stages, and I think it would benefit from input from forum users. I want it to compare features of each of the following retirement planners & calculators...

Firecalc says my portfolio reaching critical stage

I think that you are right. I think most MC simulators run "random walk" simulations (i.e., each randomly generated return is independent of all previous randomly generated returns), not "mean-reverting" simulations. Over the long term, markets tend to revert. And that's one of the benefits...

    Has anybody researched longevity annuities?

Good point. Thanks. I'm also not factoring in the surrender value, if, for example, you found out you had a terminal condition and you wanted to cash out. It has a value, but I frankly have no idea how to put a PV number on that. BTW, Mom's in the 15% bracket. I think ~5% state income taxes too.

The safety margin of variable withdrawals...

There are a lot of MC simulators that model variable, portfolio-performance-based, withdrawal strategies. What I think most people would do -- and indeed, what it looks like people on this forum are doing -- is periodically re-simulate and re-project the retirement expenditures their portfolio...

Firecalc says my portfolio reaching critical stage

Try another program I suggest you test the projected success rate of your portfolio using some other free retirement calculators, and see what results you get. For example, Jim Richmond's Flexible Retirement Planner or my TIP$TER retirement calculator. I'm curious how the results would...
