I've got Covid.... The thread for your covid experiences

Got Covid for the first time 12 days ago. Got it traveling on a cruise out of Florida. Managed not to infect anyone else in my family. Fever for 2 1/2 days, a scratchy throat, a little cough, some mild fatigue. Feeling just about back to normal, may be a little more tired than usual.

    Getting closer, need perspectives

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I agree that a lower-key position that maintains health insurance might be a good option, however, I don't hate working and have often thought that lower-paid jobs aren't really any less difficult so I may as well keep doing what I am doing. If I could find...

    Getting closer, need perspectives

It's true, I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I guess I'm looking for someone to slap me upside the head and tell me something that is going to be the magic answer. Not gonna happen, I realize that! I'm not a newbie, it's true. I am not looking to retire right now, I think we are not quite...

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

Similar to others, hit $5M a month ago with the market run up and am making firmer plans to retire at 55, 8 years from now. Kid will be out of college around that time. $5M was always my FI number but not at age 47. I need health insurance for a bit longer. Now, if I inherit $1M between now and...

    I need it all...

Welcome! May I please recommend that you do NOT rush out and buy a new car? Cars have a very bad habit of sinking people's finances into horrible places--think underwater for years with a loan. Please share your plans for childcare post-baby. Is Your wife going to have a paid maternity leave...

    Why retire early?

Interesting take on my time breakdown! That does make it seem easier. I can sense as I move into my 40s that my body is not what it used to be. I'm in good health and everything, but even I can see that working until my FRA of 67 may not be possible. As for my work being rewarding, I'm a...

    Why retire early?

Very good perspective from those who have been there, done that. I can see that work might become much more annoying if my management changes. Flexibility is key. Saving is enjoyable for me, so I don't mind doing it. In the meantime, I'm going to try not to hoard money. DH and I went to a tennis...

    Why retire early?

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the kind words, perspective, and support. I know things might change. Sometimes, I just want to ease up on my savings goals, currently 22% of gross income, but I don't think I could let any tax advantaged space go unused regardless. I did decide to spend my bonus...

    Why retire early?

I guess I always thought I would retire early. I'm 41 and a saver and will likely be in a financial position to do so. We have about 11x our gross income or 19x estimated retirement expenses in savings. I'm having trouble figuring out what I would do with myself, however, if I stopped working. I...

    Gluten Free

My daughter has a serious wheat allergy. It's a blessing in disguise for us that gluten free has become a fad. That said, we focus on whole foods, fruits and veggies, lean meats, and grains like rice and oats. GF is no big deal and it's kept our eating healthier than many families because mass...

    Refinancing Mortgage - Appreciate Advice

I refinanced with aimloan last July and had no issues. I am in a ten year fixed at 3.25% with no points. I found them to be reputable and professional. I was referred to them by a friend so I can vouch for two good experiences.

Paying off the mortgage early grows in popularity

One of the calculations I did was to determine how much money I would have to have invested to pay the mortgage with a 2% withdrawal rate. When that number was over $1M, I felt extra incentive to pay it down. However, I'm using income, not investments, and maxing out all tax-deferred space...

Paying off the mortgage early grows in popularity

Thought I'd chime in here as I'm currently paying down our mortgage. I made the decision after careful thought. I determined that I definitely wanted it paid off before daughter heads to college. And definitely before retirement. My husband works a job he dislikes and has no good prospects...

Pay off 81,000 in loans at 3.5% or save for 20% home down payment?

I agree with aaronc879--keep doing what you are doing until you buy the house, then set aside a decent emergency fund to cover household repairs (1-3% of house value), figure out how to max out your tax-deferred accounts, and put any extra to the debt.

    Your biggest hurdle?

What do you feel your biggest hurdle is to ER? For me, it's education. We want to send our daughter to private school and are saving for college expenses. I'm currently putting away about $8,000/year into college savings and I feel it will likely not be enough. Also, we're paying down our...

An update from a dreamer that's been gone for 5 years

Not to be a downer, but I wanted to point out that many new parents think that expenses will decrease drastically once daycare and preschool expenses go away. The unfortunate reality is that they don't decrease that much. As the parent of a Kindergartner, I'm astounded at how much money we...
