    Running with a new hip?

I'm expecting that I'll probably be getting a hip replacement within the next year. That doesn't concern me much, because it's a common procedure these days, but I wonder if anyone here has been able to resume running after ward? I've been a runner (maybe you'd just call me a jogger ;) ) since...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Just had a new capacitor installed in my outdoor compressor. This is no time of year to be without air conditioning. The tech said the compressor might have another two years in it, and that's about what I had guessed myself. It's 10 or 11 years old, and the cheapest model of a good brand...

Activity might be the most important thing.

I would never claim that activity is the key to a long, healthy life (although I believe it's a big part). I had a grandfather who never exercised a day in his life, drank at least as much as any of his friends, and was perfectly healthy until a year or two before his death at 96. There are...

Activity might be the most important thing.

In the past week I visited two old friends (older than me, anyway). Both male, one is 83 and the other is 86. The 83-year-old has never been at all active physically. He has spent his life in academia and achieved great success there, but never participated in any physical activity beyond...

    Rezum Treatment.

I can appreciate your situation, since I'm a guy with a very large prostate. In fact, I was first diagnosed with an enlarged prostate about 35 years ago. When it got bad enough that the drugs could no longer help me, I had a procedure that was similar to a TURP about 16 years ago. It was...

Be sure to try the different styles of Rauchbier. Schlenkerla and Spezial, of course, and the Spezial bierkeller up on the hill has an awesome view.

    Karma? A Chilling Story

We should have a thread for "You won't believe what this relative did!" I have stories about mine that would also be very entertaining, and AFAIK they are all true. I've always enjoyed your stories about your grandfather. Quite a character, indeed!

    Moved into CCRC today

That's a good one. One of my friends had his parents move there in their early 80s and they were really happy with it. Stayed until they died in their 90s. You can't emphasize enough how much research you have to put into finding the right CCRC. Financial stability, geographical location...

    QCD confused

In my experience, the 1099-R has always had the "Taxable amount not determined" box checked. It's up to me to say how much was a QCD.

I think it's only important if you don't want to reduce your IRA balance by more than the RMD amount.

    QCD confused

The main thing for you to keep in mind is to keep the letter (or email) the organization sends you containing the amount and the stipulation that you didn't get anything tangible in return for it. Probably not necessary, but might be important in case you're audited. When you do your taxes, the...

    QCD confused

True, and I should have remembered, but there is still widespread confusion about this. The issue, I think, is the "first dollar out" rule. That is, the first money distributed from an IRA is considered to be satisfying all or part of the RMD for the year. You can't recharacterize any of that to...

    QCD confused

Yes, you are supposed to take a QCD first, before any RMD amount. Your RMD is established at the start of the year. Simply subtract your total of QCDs from that amount and the remainder is what you'll have to take as RMD.
